Probably the M57 inline 6 or maybe the M67 V8 biturbo lump?

the M57 would have been a nice option

also just looked at body weights between the D2- D3 , not much in it

kerb weights

D2 / 2,061–2,220 kg (4,543–4,895 lb)

D3 / 2,419–2,461 kg (5,333–5,426 lb)

also found this interesting , ref design factor of the body

Land Rover developed a body construction method for the Discovery 3, marketed as Integrated Body Frame (IBF). The engine bay and passenger compartment are built as a monocoque, then mated to a basic ladder-frame chassis for the gearbox and suspension. Land Rover claims IBF combines the virtues of monocoque and ladder-frame – though it makes for a heavier vehicle than a monocoque construction, compromising performance and agility somewhat but adding strength, toughness and adaptability.

That's right, many people wrongly think that the Td5 engine is a BMW design but it's actually a Rover design. When it was in the design stages it was code-named "Project Storm".

Doesnt the d3 weigh about 3 tonnes? I wouldnt want a 300tdi in that lol.

300Tdi can be tuned to about 200HP..... BUT the EGT's are horrific at this power output, and it will not live for long - even the slightest issue with cooling will anneal the head... and you can guess where that takes us :(

The expense of doing this is also significant - larger FIP, larger water rad, FWIC, move the alternator, so no A/C etc...., etc...,

I know of someone who has done this - it didn't end well. ( it ended up in a scrapyard! )

If you limit the output to 145, and are careful, then it will live quite happily.... at 164 EGT's rise RAPIDLY, and possibly beyond my ability to control :eek:.

I'd suggest a D3 with 145 HP would drive like a slug - Probably better to use something like the Merc OM606 with mechanical FIP and a blower - but this won't solve the problems of integration into the bullsh*t electronics - nor the impending change to MOT emissions enforcement.
 
Maybe just for Europe cos according to topix for 2005 there are 6 versions:
2.7 diesel
2.8L OHV EFI TI 4 Cyl 100KW
3.6L Diesel
4.0L V6 Petrol
4.2L SC Petrol
4.4L V8 Petrol
between 2006 -2008 were only 3, the 2.7D , 4.0 V6 and 4.4V8 and in 2009 in addition 5.0 NA V8 petrol.... i think this one has some balls
 
The TDv8 would of gone well with the D3 IMO

The D3 debuted in 2004, Ford took ownership of JLR in 2000, that gave them plenty of time to bring in a PSA group engine to oust whatever BMW were planning. Besides, at that point the L322 Range Rover was still running a 3.0ltr straight 6, TDV8 might have shown that up a tad LOL
 
well it was just a thought guys its gave you plenty to talk about so looks like ill have 1 to break for bits and might sell the other
that would need an engine
ill see what i end up doing
