I'm currently looking at getting a Disco II but have been told by a friend who works at an independant Land Rover garage that there have been problems with the head gasket failing on the TD5 engine at about 80k or even worse the engine going pop. I'm no mechanic so can't remember what he said the cause was

Is he exaggerating (he can be a bit of a drama queen!) or are there known problems?

Is there anything else I should know before I buy?

Thanks

Sal

Well the head gasket can go this is due mainly to plastic dowels in the head and the head can move sometimes causing bad damage to bores and haed itself, dont worry not seen many and also a bolt feel out of the oil drive pump causing no oil pressure and bang but most i believe were fixed on a recall, oil leaking down injector loom contaminating the red connector at engine ecm, just a new loom required about £59.00 from L/R. and other small odds and sods dont want to scare you i do see a lot of landrovers in my normal day and of course only see broken ones.

Ok, thanks for that. It's good to know they were recalled - just got to remember to check that the vehicle I buy had this done.
