Just browsing through some used Disco 4s and began wondering about cambelts and chains. One review suggested a cambelt changer at 100,000 miles but the cost was prohibitive and the job was complicated,. Has anyone any experience of this. I thought the Disco 4 was one of the most reliable to date. Another mention was turbo seals weakening. Slightly put off by these points or am I being a wuss ?

hi

don’t know if it’s any help, had to get my belts done, which are due 105,000 miles or 7 x years

have to allow 1k for them, can easily find out if there’s much difference on the D4 as mines a 2.7 and D4s are 3.0

there is extensive knowledge in the link if it may be of use to u

Thanks gstuart - joined up 3+4. Aren't they all polite? Frightening after LZ! lol

ur very welcome , indeed they are , lol

i done a buyers guide if it may be any use to u , at the top of this section, alas be it for a D3

u will find a lot of info on the D3 forum

plse let us know how u get on

The d4 3.0 will have two belts one at the front change this one definitely the one at the back runs fuelling so if the rear one brakes it just cuts out no real damage front belt snaps allow 10k for recon engine

hi

wasn’t sure how similar the 2 x engines were, when mine were due i got all the belts, tensioners, oil pump cover, water pump, aux belt , back fuel pump belt , etc, to ensure everything was done and replaced in one go

don’t know if it’s true if the back fuel pump belt is timed in the D4 where as in the d3 it isn’t

thks

Think your right from my limited knowledge if the rear one breaks no major damage just cut the fuel off my Rus going for full belts etc very soon

I saw the guide and wondered how many days it would take me. Very comprehensive but someone with confidence would use that as a bible and be very happy

good it was of some use and insight

everything can be done in a day , but that was with mechanics who do them every day , knew i couldn’t take the job on due to the complexity of replacing the belts , watched it all being done

it’s the back belt that’s the pig due to lack of room and the D4 rear belt is timed , but u will find useful info on the d3 forum ref that

here’s mine when they were being done

Wow. So different to the first belt I ever changed and that was an Austin Cambridge '64. blue with the cream stripe down the sides. Took the valves out and had them reground at 10 pence each. OD Motors on the Antrim Road, Belfast. 1971. Beautiful car - sold it for £65.

First one I ever did was an 8v Astra 1.6. An hour and twenty minutes start to finish including a cup of tea and putting the tools away.
Don't think I'd even attempt a d3 or 4!

First car I did the valve regrind on was my first car the Vauxhall Viictor FB. Shortly after the valves were done it started smoking as I think the rings were no longer up to the job.

brings back memories , first cyl head and grinding valves i done was on my triumph herald :)

dad taught me and handed me a stick with suckers on each end a small pot with 2 x lids, marked find and course

the easy days then looking after engines, lol

also to scared changing the belts on my D3

Same here (double ended pot and the stick with suckers on that is. No D3 here to worry about.
