I have a 2015 LR Discover 4. It has been carefully driven (on road only )for 39000 miles (the front brake pads are still only 30% worn).
It has just had it’s first MOT and I’ve been advised that the rear brake pads are so worn it requires new pads and new discs. Furthermore the front lower control arms need replacing. £1200 please!
Will this happen every 40 000 miles ?

Welcome
That’s an Ouch:(.
How handy are you with spanner’s?
I am sure somebody with this model will be along soon and give you a “how to do it” . That sort of work is not normally difficult.
Good luck.

But what’s really puzzling is how the front pads can be hardly worn while the rears have completely gone (parking brake generally not used). Is this common ?

Have you looked at the pads yourself, was the mot garage wanting to make work, if was Landrover dealer, they do work to a standard,” near enough, is not good enough”

To answer, I don’t know:( I could take a stab,as it a bigger pad on front as opposed to rear, so even though more force goes to front effectively it has more surface area so wear is less, that’s very basic thoughts.
We had the rears changed on the 322 before the fronts, the def90 now needs rears doing when fronts are fine(but that’s old and history unknown).

You may want to pop this question in the Disco section to get more response. I take it you have owned from new?

Heavier LR's like the Disco 4 do eat brake pads and suspension bushes regular. Yer moving a lot of weight about.

Let's get this clear before I say anything, I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CARS except how to drive them! My D4 has just had a 'visible check' report at the LR dealer whilst they were fitting me a dog guard and they reported that my front pads were 10% worn and the rear ones 50%. I queried why the discrepancy and was told that the braking system is set so that, when braking, the rear takes most 'strain' in order to stop the launch forward that would normally occur on normal braking. Do I believe it? Don't know.

Lad at work just had discs and pads all round on disco 4 at LR dealer during service. They did a video for him, showed the rear as being worn more heavily than front so maybe truth in it

Well known they are heavy on brakes and bushes, particularly lower arms.

D4 has the brake assist cornering thing where they apply the rear brake ont side yer terning to help it hug the corner. Also previous owner may have changed the front and not the rear which may offer a reason for some of the difference.

The D4 corners surprisingly well for the big vehicle it is. But it does so ont borrowed time. It punishes brakes and suspension bushes int process.

Hi

Indeed the brake assist is for emergency situations , think Volvo has an automatic system to apply the brakes before the driver thinks about it

Also cheap pads may have been fitted , or sticking caliper , think it’s a new set of discs for every 3rd pad change

I was also surprised how well the D3 cornered for such a large heavy lump , but believe the D4 has a hydraulic anti roll bar fitted , pads and bushes should last a good 40-50,000 miles , of course like everything depending if there genuine or not

Doesn’t the FL2 also have the brake assist

FL2 has corner brake control which is what I was trying to eggsplain above. Just had to look it up as theres all sorts of 3 letter gizmo's. It applies the rear brake as needed on the side yer cornering to help hug the corner. Aids control and balance of said vehicle. D4 has the same. Hence why modern LR's corner so well. Improvement int suspension anorl helps. The only problem is if yer dun't realise and drive it to the limit... Theres nothing left to help reduce a mistake. Bit like driving faster ont snow with the mindset the abs will fix it if there's trouble. It won't if yer taking the p*ss.
