Hi, it would be very much appreciated if someone could offer me some help regarding a speedo and odometer fault.
My fathers speedo and odometer/ mile counter thingy have stopped working on his M-reg 300 tdi Discovery.
I have searched ebay, but does anyone know the part numbers for the odometer cable and the speedo cable? There's a blue connection behind the speedo that has some damage, a part number for this connection would be great too.
Where does the speedo get the speed input from?
Where does the odometer get it's info from?
I've ordered a speed transduicer which i was told to get just in case, and would like to replace the cables whilst i have time.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ok, i will have confused everyone. The blue connection was actually a bulb.
It looked like a female spade connection to me anyway.

doesn't the speedo and Odo work from a wire at the back of the alternator?

The rev counter which picks up it's info from the alternator...

As it's your speedo that's giving you a problem that picks up the info from the vehicle speed sensor which is located on the transfer box casing so check the wiring plug there first...

Only four things to look at the electrical plug connections, the speed sensor and link cable or the speedo head itself...

The part no. for a replacement is AMR1253 Transducer Speed and the O-ring seal is 571665... I think  or it was !!!
from VIN MA081992 the speed sensor is fitted on the side of the transfer box fixed with a single allen bolt ...

Thank you all very much.
I will investigate the above suggestions this morning.
I will post when i have sussed it out.
Thank you.

Saga continues i'm afraid i've been rained off.
New speed transduicer, o-ring and speedo wire arrived so all set.
Rain due to stop at 12:09 tomorrow....fingers crossed.

Good afternoon,
Well, i put the new speed transduicer on....right between the handbrake drum and transfer box....which wasn't much fun given my hands are huge and i don't have a ramp. It was do-able, just make sure you put patience in your toolbox.
As i was plugging in the speed transduicer lead, it felt loose. I followed it forwards and found the other end had been cut. I phoned the previous owner and he said "Honest son, it happened last week and i had ordered a new cable"... Bollocks is what went through my mind, but can you argue with old people? I certainly couldn't. So, the saga continues.
Where does the speed transduicer cable/ speedo wire enter the engine bay/ continue on up to the dash, and has anyone got any photos/ descriptions of what the connections should look like in the engine bay/ dash area/ cab.
The old transduicer had rounded, so i kinda believe the old guy about him trying to get the job fixed as the MOT mileage was less than at present, and it all seemed honest enough. Anyway, please help me with wiring descriptions from the cut wires that lead off the transduicer......to getting it in the engine bay/ dash/ cab. All help appreciated.

Been a while, i've been at sea. Speed and odometer fault still continue. No idea what's wrong. Could it be in the gearbox itself?

Bullet has been bitten, LR specialist booked for a week Monday. Will post the results if and when she returns. :(
