Discovery 3 Electronic Parking Brake

I am considering buying a D3 ..... and have been looking at the issues associated with ownership......the key one looks like the dreaded EPB.....

The Electronic Park Brake is operated by a pair of brake shoes on the inside of the rear brake disks.
The manufacturer recommends that you strip, clean and adjust the EPB after 50 miles of off road conditions
or arduous use.
If you have a loud screeching noise when the EPB is applied, then often an adjustment of the Electronic Park
Brake will fix this.​

This procedure MUST be carried out when you change your brake disks and/or brake shoes. If the pads are worn below​

the limit, you should replace the pads as well as go through the Electronic Parking Brake Shoe Bedding In Procedure.

So landrover make one of the most capable off road cars in the world .... and then fit a system that requires ressetting and cleaning and 50 miles of off roading!!!!!!! Not only that ... this system seems so vulnerable I am sure road salt in normal use would compltely feck the set up within 12 months .... which is why so many people are having problems......... so I think the moral is if you own one .... have the rear discs removed anually and all parts cleaned throughly and coppa slipped etc ..... or else. Oh by the way I recommend you do it yourself .... as dealerships won't be assed ..... unless you have a really good independant...

Does any body have any views..... is it trure there is a modified EPB module that is stronger.....???

No views on this ... strange .... just spoken to a friend of mine who has one ... and has owned for 3 years done 68k ..... never had a EPD issue ........... Has this problem been overblown - by rants from a few angry (and rightly so) owners????

must say i have just fitted new discs and pads on my sons D3 and the epd is all working handsomely with no adjustment needed for new discs.......good result for a change, from a seven year old vehicle .

It could be that there is an updated module available as I haven't had to go and release a D3 parking brake for over 6 months now.

I own a D3 09 my bought new july 09 still having / had problems with seats, sat nav ,heater, suspension,EPB 5 VISITS to dealer,water ingress into cabin.windscreen washer fluid into passenger footwell,rear wash wipe,parking sensors. Anyone know a dealer who knows how to fix a D3 mine does not .Let alone clean it before giving it back.

I have had 3 Discovery 3's a 54, 55 and have a 57 still. I have had the EPB problem with all of them. It is a common fault, most of the time it is fixed by cleaning. Or an electronic reset.

I bought a device to do this as the dealers charge handsomel;ey for this 2 minute job.

Right now, my 57 is stuck and completely locked up on the EPB. I have called the RAC.....

It is a common fault.

I thought there was a manual release method via the centre console box?

There is. It's under a panel by the switch! Pain if it jams the mechanism tho?

There is but if you get the squeal of death it often won't release. If you do get it released and have an auto box you can pull the fuse on the epb to temporarily stop the brake re-applying and use park on the gearbox instead.

Yes indeed there is, but I could not budge it, neither could the RAC. In fact I ended up with two RAC vans and the chaps dismantled the brake on my drive, to find that the shoes had welded. The brake coating can disintegrate and then it slowly melts whilst driving.

I got the warning screeches, but I had this many times before, so I ignored it.........

So next time I get the screech I will get them cleaned. Unfortunately this EPB system, is prone to dirt and grime and i believe it is true on many other vehicles......

That is a good tip, because at the moment I have shoes only on one side! Removing the fuse will stop an accidental goodnes knows what!:violin:

Speaking of which where is a good source of land rover brake parts?

Mine came on after driving through deep surface water during the bad weather. Gonna strip them down ASAP.

Hello all I'm hoping someone can enlighten me if its worth fitting the superseded module for the EPB? I had my handbrake suddenly jam on my Disco 3 (30'000 miles auto diesel), with no previous signs of problems or noises then suddenly the famous screech when I went to disengage the handbrake and that was that! All attempts to manually over ride it failing even trying the diagnostic machine wouldn't budge it so the 9" angle grinder came out and we were free. Problem is the handbrake light now flashes at me from the dash, probably something to do with not being able to reset the module. I've seen that there are 4 or 5 supersedes for this part however I don't want to waste my money fitting one unless Land Rover has it sorted?
