Hi There,

Im a new member based in the Highlands and Ive just bought a 2002 Discovery Td5 XS manual with about 128,000 on the clock. I'm hoping for any advice on the following:

Vehicle drove great for a while, then yesterday 'ping' noise in the dash, ABS light came on and a horrible banging/grinding noise came from the front - I think more drivers side but not sure. Stopped, checked the basics, fired her up again and the noise continued for a couple of minutes, both whilst turning and on the straight. Then the noise stopped and I carried on at 60mph until I got home. ABS light still on.

Jacked her up this morning and checked the basics - nothing obviously broken (Springs etc) but the n/s front wheel bearing is fairly goosed. Slight oil leak from front diff, but level is OK.

I suppose my question is would a knackered bearing cause the noise/light? If not any suggestions as to what may be the problem?

Also - vehicle does not have Active Cornering Enhancement.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Knackered bearing would send the ABS sensor haywire id have thought. Someone more knowledgeable will be along but when you do your bearing, check abs sensor is seated properly and wiring to it is ok.

Replace the hub, a few good write ups around, if you have not done one before, shout out and I will post a linkie to one.

Cheers

Thanks neilly. Do you think the faulty hub would cause the horrible noise? Also I am assuming that its whole a new hub, rather than just new bearings like a Disco 1?

This Gents website is fantastic, Deffo worth a good butchers. If the bearing is goosed as you say then that is where I would start. Are you sure it was not the traction control cutting in, that makes a heck of a racket..

This link is to the front hub change, you need a long bar or torque wrench. I buy the ones from aapoldham on the bay. about £55 or so.

Thanks again - not sure about the traction control - the noise sounded metallic and a bit bangy! Great link - many thanks I'll give the bearing a go and hope it cures it.
