Hello,
please can somebody tell me if it is difficult replace one of these?

I have been told it needs to be done for my MOT,I was told joints are fine but i have a tear in a cover.
I looked up the ball joints and that looks very hard to me.I checked m y Hayne manual and its not clear.
Thank you

you have to remove hub and caliper, then undo the 2 ball joint nuts ,if you whack the yoke where ball joint passes through top and bottom till the joint releases yoke will come away and joints are then accessible, but often once yoke is released play will show in bottom ball joint

@westone

If you look at discovery ball joints on you tube you can find some good vids of how to do it. At least you only have to ge t to the point where you can replace the ball joint boot.

Cheers

Thank you for your answers.
I had a look at the videos and it looks difficult to me as a novice.I see some special tools are needed.I saw this on e bay and wondered if using the kit would mean i could just cut the old one out and fit a new cover?

Or is this a bodge please, not keen on this,I cannot see any damage on them, but i may be wrong. The fitter was adamant joints are fine...It was Halfords a pre MOT check.I go to a independent place for my MOT,run by the council. They do not do repairs.

Those things do look interesting. Talking to my own MoT garage, it appears that just replacing the boot, provided that the ball joint isn't worn is an accepted valid repair technique these days. Don't forget that it's good practice when you do anything on one side of the steering or suspension, to do the same on the other side. So you might need two kits.
Provided you keep things clean and grease free until the glue has hardened it should be OK.
If you decide to give it a go, I'd be interested to hear how you get on.

joints often feel fine till you release the yoke, the release of pressure allows you then to feel play, i think youd struggle fitting a split gaiter on those joints compared to the usual cv, but it seems its garage fees or try a bodge

Thank you all,I had a quote of £160.00 to have it done, so am still thinking.I think the special told would cost that.
I will update you all

Hi all,
I had my Land Rover mot tested today and it passed on all points, but I had 7 advisories. These were the ball joint cover and same for anti roll bars front and rear and 3 brake pipe ferrules with surface corrosion. The tester told me not to worry about any of it.But I think I will get it all done or do it myself.I am going to look it all up. I go to a VSOE test station where they are strict but good as they do not do repairs.
I only did 463 miles last year and the tester thought nothing was pressing.I do like my Discovery to be as good as it can be so will get busy.
Thank you all for your help, very much appreciated.
