As I'm swapping my series 3 for a 200tdi 90 soon (wanna swap anyone?), I'm thinking of putting in a higher ratio disco transfer box as it'd be used as a daily drive.
Is it worth it?

Cheers guys.

having not long done this on my own 110 i'd deffo say yes, it transforms the vehicle - it's no longer a race up the box, the noise level at normal road and mway speeds is dramatically reduced and it's had a significant positive affect on the fuel consumption

also, if your 90 has those silly looking standard 205 tyres on change them for a nice tall set such as 750s

and it's a simple task to change, nuts and bolts, bit of goo when mating the boxes and BoBs an idiot

Cheers Sean, thought it'd be beneficial as like said, most of my time is on road, would I need to re-calibrate my speedo at all? Also, anyone wanna swap a 200tdi 90 for a very tidy petrol series 3?

my speedo used to read very slightly high - now it reads very slightly low

as there's only a few MPH in it i havent bothered, am not sure if anyone would take on the job of recalibration these days (unless it was for big bucks)

I have got a disco transfer box on my defender and its makes it a comfyer drive, you dont have to race through the box.

Works well untill the defender side goes bang..........

I think I might try this when ive rebuilt the 110's engine.
I put RR diffs in my lightwieght years ago, what a difference!

Have been thinking of doing this to my Defender for ages. I think it will be a job for the summer. What kind of price should a disco transfer box be, and also is it a straight forward job to switch over? Cheeers, Oli

Also, with one, possibly 2 people doing it, bearing in mind I haven't done anything with gear boxes before aside from change gear and fit overdrives, about how long would it take to change, a day possibly? And what's a reasonable price for a disco transfer box?

I paid £40 for mine but would be happy to go up to £6o if the input gear is in good nick.

It took me about 6 hours on my own to do but I did change input seal and both output seals. Jai

Is swapping the transfer box, literally a bolt off, bolt on jobbie and presumably there a gasket wetween the gearbox and transfer box that would need replacing?

Ive seen a few boxes on the bay with the disco handbrake still on, would this mate up to the props on a defender, or does it require changing to the defender handbrake??

Ollie

So is that again a straight swap, i didnt quite understand whether i would need a new bracket (in which case, what one would i need??) or would i need to drill and tap mounting holes as jai said??
