I've managed to exchange some parts and ended up with a disco transfer box to replace my current 1.4 ratio box in my 1989 90. It currently has 33x12.5 r 15 khumos and a 300tdi in it so hopefully will work well. :D

However, will it still be able to pull away on slight inclines with a loaded trailer weighing 3.5 tonnes or is it likely to struggle?

Also, I'm planning on buying some 35 simex style tyres purely for offroad use, if these are fitted and I have to drive any form of journey, will my gearing then be too high or is it still drivable?

Thanks, Harry

Ask yourself this. Can a 300tdi disco pull such a trailer? There's your answer. 35" tyres might find you struggling a bit with said trailer though.

i put a 1.410 defender box on a td5 disco as it wasnt boss in all situations with 3 ton trailer especially up hil or pulling off, then fitted overdrive for his empty trip home

It's only several times a year i tow a trailer like that but often towing a 19 foot flatbed with a 90 on it.

My 90 pulls it without a problem on 33s but just wondered how it would be with a disco transfer box, I won't be towing on the 35s, they will only be for off road use, sorry if i wasn't clear.:D

well in thar case put disco box in, you will need to drill 2 holes for 8mm x 1.25 bolts to hold rear of hand brake bracket in speedo housing
