Disco II Check Straps

Hi All,

Please bear with me as I am new to the Disco world, but after buying one I could do with some help.

Sent my beautiful lady to have an MOT and one of the advisories is to do with the Check strap on the front drivers side and also the passenger side says it is the check strap mounting that needs replacing.....

Now I am a complete novice at anything mechanical and I want to learn as much as I can, BUT the questions are......

#1 - What the hell is a check strap / check strap mounting
#2 - Is it an easy enough job for a novice to do(and if it is easy enough, what tools am I likely to need?) or am I best taking it to someone who knows what they are doing?

Ah right I see, are they easy to replace for a novice?

First thing - download the RAVE CD and have a look. There are a few links if you google Land Rover RAVE CD. It is the official workshop manual and has lots of useful info for doing this kind of job.
