Have a strange problem with the heater fan on this '91 Disco I.

Fan runs normally in the A/C position. All speeds normal.

With the selector in A/C+heat, the fan runs in position 1 but gets progressively SLOWER as you INCREASE the fan switch thru positiions II and III.

With the selector in Recirc or Fresh Outside, the fan does not run in any position of the fan switch. Relays click as the selector switch is cycled from Recirc/Fresh Outside/AC+Heat/AC. I can tell there is a current drain because in Recirc or Fresh Outside, moving the fan selector switch towards the faster speeds results in progressive (yet slight) dimming of the interior light.

If I had an electrical schematic for the gaddamn thing I could figure it out.... I did a forum search and it appears nobody's been unlucky enough to have this problem yet.

Any idears?

Well I found the electrical diagrams for a Disco I *without* A/C... but that doesn't really help as it appears there are a total of 3 fan motors in this bastard - 2 for the A/C which are readily visible in the passengers footwell (this is a LHD) and the heater fan prolly buried deep in the gizzard of the coffin-sized heater/AC box.

There's also a ****load of relays in the little hatch in the passenger footwell. Tried bridging each one - a couple ran the A/C fans, one cranked the starter, dunno what the others do. No heater fan action.

I suspect what's happened is the fan motor has seized up and as you crank the speed up, with progressively less resistance in the circuit, the seized fan draws more and more current and thus dims the dash lights.

So, where the gaddam hell is the fan motor and how do I get it out? i removed the center console and as much bull**** as I could around the switches but still couldnt find the motor... Also could REALLY use a electrical diagram for a early (1991) Disco I *with* A/C.

Thanx for any help!

yep, youre gonna struggle to find a diagram for a early D1 with AC. ive never actually seen a 200 shape with AC.

maybe its a left hand drive thing?

the fan motor is inside the heater box, you have to remove the whole dash to remove it. and then its a bit of a bugger to split the heater box open.

i have a fair amoubnt of trouble with my non ac model fan.

i carry a hammer as sometimes i have to tap the right hand side underneath to make the fan work, sometimes i have to beat it real hard! :D

its a **** job tbh mate, and my hunch is that your AC model was a non UK thing, so finding diagrams in a haynes manual or similar is very unlikely!

(i have left my haynes manual at work so cannot check right now)

cheers!
