disco cutting out

as said in my intro,got my 1st landy,its a 1997 discovery...
got it saturday,and all well,today it cut out on the busy high street,got a tow,my mate looked at it and took the fuel filter off,which was barely tightened up and there was virtually no fuel in it,he figured it could be the lift pump,the little pump handle on it was broken,can anyone shed any light for me please...

If the lift pump is broke then you need a new one!
They don't cost much, I'd buy a new filter too. Loosen the nut on top of filter housing, bleed the air out and Bobs your uncle.

now im being told its the sediment bowl...what next,im not at all mechanically minded,as you can probably tell,really feel like trying to get my money back...........

Cleaning the sedimenter is an easy home job-its at the back (same side as fuel filler)up behind that wheel-undo it from above using a 10mm or 11mm spanner(do not try and undo the bowl drain,they snap)the whole thing will drop when the bolt is undone(plastic bag helps here)-clean it out,then refit-job done.
