So the new addition was put on the ramps and a list made of what it needed to pass an MOT. Quite a bit of welding on body parts, but at least the chassis is in great condition. Given what needs doing I may sort out all the wheel arches to get them back to standard. It has 2" lift and 75 tyres on so the previous hacked the body (and by hacked I mean H-A-C-K-E-D. One thing it was pulled up for was lack of anti roll bars, and they also cut the mounting brackets off, so that will be a bracket pre-fab job. Apart from that it's not as bad as it could have been!
Now I just need to source all the right bits of panels. Oh and a new steering rod - shocking state!

Anti roll bars don't come in to it ! If they aint there they can't be MOT able !
Mine hasn't had them for last two MOT's & nowts been said !

What year is it?
Earlier 200 disco's didn't have anti-roll bars or the chassis / axle brackets (think introduced around '94 & the change to 24 spline axleso_O

My '92 200tdi has never had arb's fitted, my '94 200tdi (work in progress) has the brackets welded to axles & chassis but never had the bars fitted:rolleyes:

Arbsare usually removed for off-roading to increase suspicion articulation ;)

Rich.

Yes, it has the marks where the arb brackets have been cut off the chassis (96MY).
It's down to interpretation - I know my MOT guy very well and he's going to double check, but that's not the issue. The issue is that with 2" lift and 75 tyres, it's not stable above 55mph (ish). I need to have it road docile as whilst it will be used for some trials, that's not its primary purpose - it will mainly be used for tramping up to the Lakes with a canoe and maybe some green laning.
I am just considering maybe getting rid and buying a less modified one. But I do like this one - it looks like it's just been round the world and so I needn't be precious about it. I suppose I could reduce the tyre size in the hope it improves stability, but arbs are not an issue for me. I wouldn't have bothered with a 2" lift if it hadn't already been done.

My 94 / 5 door 2" lift on back (heavy duty springs standed shocks) 1"lift on front (standed shocks) No anti roll bars drives nice NO excessive roll ! My 96/ 3 door 2" lift all round disc cones on back & sqwigy springs all round you need to take your sea leg tablets:eek::rolleyes: + no anti roll bars !

I think the main contributory difference there would be the heavy duty springs. By their nature, they probably have less compliance (bounciness) than standard springs, with or without standard shock absorbers or dampers or anti-roll bars.
I would prefer to drive on slightly more compliant (more bouncy) springs with good dampers and anti-roll bars, static or active.

Hi Brian When I eventually get the 3 door on the road:rolleyes::rolleyes: I will be putting anti roll bars on just to get that sea sickness feeling out of the ride :eek::rolleyes:

Well, with all the body welding required, the arbs can wait. Sills, rear arches, rear boot space edges (what are they called? o_O) bit of front inner wing and bit of drivers floor. All interesting stuff.
