Hello everyone can anyone give me an idea of my problem i have a discovery 2 with manual gearbox (R380) when driving everything seems fine. when i select 5th gear i get a nasty kind of noise kind of like a whining noise combined with a humming noise. i can hear it ever so slightly in 4th to but in 5th its very loud and as i increse in speed the noise gets louder but also sounds faster. It hasnt rearly come with any signs it was a little sound the other day but now its rearly bad any ideas would be appreciated. Dan

We have noticed a very high-pitched whine in 5th on our D2 V8, but it hasn't really been bad enough to investigate.

I can't remember if the R380 is an overdrive 5th or straight-through, it does sound like it's an overdriven 5th.

Just check the Rave CD.

It's all-indirect apart from 4th gear, which is a straight through drive.

Bearing replacement time?

Peter

Evening all, searched and found this old thread and it's the same issue as I have, does anyone have an idea as to what is the issue or how to solve.

Just got back from 3 days in Ireland (work) and ask other half how things are and I get my car is making a funny noise, so just road tested and yes she is right,

Thanks all

To be fair that thread is from 2009

Hell of a resurrection :D

But that said, it's probably the rear support bearings failing, 5th and reverse put more pressure on the support bearing because they are the only gears within the extension casing, all the other gears sit in the main case sandwiched between taper roller bearings.

Imminent box implosion on the way imho, when the bearing finally gives out the layshaft and mainshaft can force each other apart leadsing to teeth being stripped...

This usually happens due to oil starvation/poor servicing tbh, the LR service schedule is WAY too long.

Get a recon ASAP.

Yes I know but it was after searching and there was no reply with an outcome...
