hi, iv got a defender 90 N/A 2.5 and i want to put a 200tdi disco engine in it, so will the gearbox match up ok?

appaerently not... i read it somewhere. that why 200tdi disco engines are cheaper to buy than defender 200tdi engines. cos their a C%^£ to fit. you need to mod a few of the mount points and some other bits. not sure really, someone else will be along shortly who has hopefully done this transplant and explain what else you need to change.

seen a 200tdi engine on ebay reacently that is going for loads.

The main difference between a 200tdi Disco and defender engine is the position of the turbo. You will have to make up a front pipe. Have seen a conversion bit somewhere but cant remember where. gearbox and engine should match up .Trouble really starts when you try to fit disco engine and gearbox into defender because disco clutch housing is longer, so everything is in a different position than defender. Hope this helps.------BB

Main problem is the exhaust, Steve Graham LR do an adaptor pipe cos it ends up very tight on the bulkhead. Otherwise should be Ok 5 speed LT77 box in both but as previous post the Disco box has longer bellhousing, while doing it change the clutch fork even if it looks OK.:)

hiya all

just a quick one,

this is a decent conversion to do, me an my mate done his 110 pick up, it was a 2.5 na now its a 200 TDI,, bought a second hand disco an ripped the bits from it we needed,, the defender now goes like stink in comparison,, its easy enough to do, buy the conversion pipe if you dont kno any good welders.
steve Parker is good for the front pipes Steve Parker Land Rovers Ltd, Rochdale, Land Rover vehicle specialists.

other than that there was no mods needed,, it took us 2 days to do the complete refit,,

if you need any advice just send me a PM an il get intouch,,

Baz :)

check out minimans photo dairy of his conversion. (miniman site) some nice piccys.
explains the exhaust manifold problem.
i was talking to him at the weekend, and he confirmed that the only real problem is the manifold.

hi, ok i got the gearbox reconed and fitted no probs, then i got a exhaust off steve parker for £130 inc postage! and that works a treat all the only problem i got now is the fan i need to fit an electric fan! so any iadea?

what 90baz200tdi says is right but for got to say you need to remove
one or two locating pins on defender bell housing.use old engine mount brkts. i modified cast bend on exshurst. an used disco front pipe
had to mod bulkhead.and make new piece inside cab
baz forgot to say his dad got roped in to help with welding an fabrication work

better pic connects straight onto a defender tdi exhaust, it laps over the 200tdi and i put a sleve in it and put a 300tdi exhaust on it.just a little modifacation on the front pipe!
