Provided that you can engage centre diff lock it will.
But, ain't there always a but, not all Disco 2's have the CDL.
If the transfer box hi/lo gear lever moves correctly to the left, then you probably have the CDL, if not, you'll have to get out and get under to check if you have the control spigot, towards the front and on the top of the transfer box, if that is present then you probably have the CDL internals, so you can use it to engage the CDL.
If not you are in technical parlance .... stuffed.

Question is will a Disco 2 run ok without the front prop on? as looked under mine and the double joint is fubared!
i sustain what @brian47 said with the addendum that it will run decently for a short time untill you fix it but it's far from being OK. also be aware that it's not recommended to exceed 40mph with locked center diff regarrdlerss of propshafts cos it's about the tranfer box's internals

the question is can you move the car without the prop attatched, remove to fix it, or does the car have to sit there until it is fitted? ie does it become 2 wheel drive, i want to take it off, to repair, but without the shaft on is the car dead

@discodrivercumbria

Your question has been answered, If you want to drive the vehicle with only the rear prop in place, then it will only drive if you engage CDL, The BIG question is "Do you have CDL inside the T box?, if you do can you engage it ?"

Look at what @brian47 wrote.

Plus, do drive the car with consideration and care.

EDIT: To clarify, if you DO NOT have CDL, then the car will not move when one of the props is removed. Unless you are towing it.

Cheers
