Disco 2 starter problem

Turn key and hear a clunk from engine bay
Eventually after a dozen or so attempts at starting the starter motor kicks and engine starts
Not had a look yet, but only thought so far is bad earth?
Anyone know where to look first for simple things?

more often you need a solenoid kit the contacts burn out

From your description of a "clunk from the engine bay", the first thing I would be looking at would be the starter motor solenoid.
This is the high current electrically operated switch on the starter motor unit.
The internals of this solenoid are quite cheap to replace.

And it is very easy to do, unless like me where you manage to turn a half hour job into about three hours because you miss out one of the plastic insulators and put on and take off the motor about four times before noticing said piece of plastic on the bench in front of you, lesson learned, count the bits of plastic.................
