I am looking around for some 17" steel wheels for disco 2 hubs.

I need them because the ultra4 truck I am building will use disco 2 axles for strength and I will be likely running 40/13.5/17 tyres (I wanted to use 37's as they're much cheaper but not sure my vehicle will be as competitve with them compared to the 40's that other top teams are using)

If I simply cannot get any I will be forced to use 37" tyres but that will certainly put me a little behind I reckon.

Anyone seen some about?

Well I didn't want to comment because I'm probably wrong, but I've read loads on D2 wheel and tyre combos, UK, AUS and US forums and never heard of 17" steel wheels. 15s & 16s plenty.

Not to say they're not out there but I've haven't seen any so far.

Thanks for that I will drop em an email. I just didn't want to get the Disco axles for 40" tyres when I couldn't even get the= wheels! If I was going to run 37's I'd probably make do with the standard axles and have them reinforced. It's mostly for them darn steering swivels though (weak spot)

Christ!

Good to know the steels can be had, did they say in which style and offset?

They gave me the following:

17 x 8 et25 In a Black D Modular priced at £69.90

But I think I am going to end up with 37's now to my disappointment. Still think I am going to go with the disco 2 axles though. I can get Cooper Discoverer STT 37's at £210 each for 17" wheels(very good I think and my 31's on my 90 are more pushing more towards 33 than 31). Could also get 38" maxxis creepy crawlies fir £250 each. Would love Trepador comps but even in 37' form they are £375.

I should have a little more time on may hands after the next couple of weeks and I hope to get the body cut off the disco and the cage/frame booked by Easter. Hopefully soon I will awaken my dormant build thread haha.

Things left to do (basically):

Strip interior
Cut off necessary body
Roll / cage frame (££££££££££££)
Disco 2 axles built with Ashcroft lockers (££££££££)
Twin battery setup (oddyssey or optima)
Paint winch and put on rope
Seats + harnesses
Race fuel cell and fuel lines
Wheels / tyres
Hydrosteer ram (££££££)
New cats (can't find a decat for the V8 or trickery for the lambda sensors)
lights
Compressor for lockers
underbody protection

Loads im likely missing

+ lots of fiddling and more money.

+ I need to finish rebuilding a disco 1 axle for the rear of me 90

At least nothing expensive on that!

Hopefully I'll be in for the 2016 season.... Tech specs are hard to comply with in some cases.

Try as best you can to get to KOV this year. The regs are lower this year and if you get your chassis stamped 2015 its then legal from then on. 2016 is going to comply by international regs such as KOH with tighter restrictions and more regs. Thats why I really want to make KOV this year :)

Not sure what im doing wheel wise yet but it will 100% include beadlocks

Reason for D2 axles is they're stronger than the usual Defender / disco ones. Primarily at the swivels for the steering. Seen a couple of defender axles snap here at KOV unfortunately. Don't want to be gutted like some of the teams there.

Ayre, No way am I going to get it done for this season haha. I am going in top class and I don't have a workshop, I'm doing most of it from home (except roll cage ofc or any major work)! And yeah I know about the regs. I'm just going to have to build it to the USA specs unfortunately. I laughed where they said vehicles must have no leaks!

Weld on beadlocks seem a reasonable idea on a budget. What tyres you going for?

I managed to go to the autosport show last week and meet some of the ultra4 guys, Jim, Levi etc. Top chaps.

Yeah ill probably do weld on beadlocks, mainly for cost but I can choose offset then too :) im probably going for 35 treps although theres a few others im looking into, got abit of time to choose though.

Haha yeah hopefully this way I can keep my 90 fuel tank for now. Getting stamped this year gives me options :)

I just missed the autosport show unfortunatly, would have been awesome to go :) although I've talked to jim for over an hour over the phone, really nice helpful guy :)

Ill never beat him though :(

Gotcha, cheers

To my knowledge, the rules come into effect this year and if your vehicle was stamped last year its ok for future events?

Thats what I thought when I got the xmas email from Ultra4 Europe

- Effective immediately, we will be following one global technical rulebook. Before you throw your computer or phone across the room, 2015 will be a 'Grandfather' year. If your car passed tech inspection in 2014, it will pass again in 2015. And if it races and is chassis tagged in 2015, it will pass in perputuity.

To restate, if you could race in 2014, you will be fine in 2015. If you pass tech and race in 2015, your chassis will be exempt permanently. All new builds after 2015 will have to pass the standard Ultra4 rulebook.

The only immediately effective rule change are tire size in Modified being raised to 37" in all races and the requirement for true automotive based helmets. Motorcycle helmets cannot be used because the padding material is not fire retardant.

I see.

The thing annoying me the most though is having to fit a cross bar on the doors for side impact protection. So much for my quick entrance and exit through doors :p

Also, i read vehicles with doors must have a second latch mechanism on the doors. Any ideas of how I could do that?

Yeah the side protection is abit of a pain. The GP truck doesnt have one only a welded rock slider which gets it through, I don't know if thats grandfather rules or allowable, its the route id like to go but ill install a bar if I have to

Havent heard about the double latch though

Yeah it's double latch for factory doors. Rules from the Ultra4 (US) website.

Gonna start phoning around for roll cages next week. Hopefully I can get something similar to the GP setup for £1.5k.....
