Hello I am having an issue with my window motor on my 1999 discovery 1. The issue is that my drivers side window motor isn't working properly. I'm not sure if its stuck or what because when I use the switch to power the window up and down it moves maybe a quarter to half an inch but thats as far as it goes. I had this happen once before after I washed the vehicle at a car wash, but after a few minutes the window went back to working properly. I assumed a bit of water might have caused it to slip and once it dried it would be fine. I'm not exactly sure what the issue is exactly, whether its the window motor going bad or an electical issue that's shorting power to it. I'm willing to get a new window motor for it I just want to make sure that that's what it needs to actually fix the problem. I purchased the vehicle from a private party in August and due to my work I'm rarely home so I haven't really had time to diagnose it on my own. I'm hoping someone here has had a similar issue previously.

Thanks for reading my post
Best regards

Hi, unfortunately you will have to remove the inner door card to check the motor, as u say u can hear the the motor I would suspect that the window regulator has finally giving up and has become partly detached from the motor, as they do, and has destroyed its self, it will still be attached to the motor but bent and broken so will require replacing to enable the window to operate as it should.

The link shows an example of what regulator looks like.

Okay thanks do you by chance know if that part comes Individually or do you have to get the whole assembly? I'm hoping to order the parts and have a mechanic install them since I caught h*ll trying to get a window on track before in a cavalier I had a while back so from then on I don't try to do alot of work on windows due to fear of getting it disassembled and can't get it back together. Before when it was sick I'd just cycle the switch several times going up and down and eventually it freed itself, that could explain why its no longer working, the motor put too much force on the part and bent it in the process. Thankfully its almost completely closed for now so i can drive it without wearing a blanket and a fur coat this winter lol.

Okay you require, assuming it's the front doors, the part in the link indicated a (1) regulator. But don't Take the part number as gospel, as there superseded variations now
I have a look if the the link has the part numbers list in my Land Rover D 1 parts manual, if so they are correct, I take it it's one of the front door that has the issue...

Yea drivers side front door is the one with the issue currently
If you have an assistant you could open your door and place your hands spread on opposite sides, inside and outside on the window glass and push up or pull down whilst the assistant operates the window switch on the console in whatever direction. This will confirm if the electric winder motor is working or not. Sometimes the reason the window will not move is because of the window glass sticking in the bailey channels or lack of lubrication on the regulator mechanism within the door, or parts worn/broken in this mechanism. As you have indicated the motor is trying to work, so electrics could be ok.
Most common problem is the small nylon rollers in the channel at the base of the window glass, (running back and forth to lift/lower the glass), reguator mechanism breaking in half leaving the metal axle pin engaged with the metal channel that the rollers are supposed to run in, there was someone making replacements in Britain on here a while back, I have access to a lathe so I made new nylon rollers for the mechanism when some broke on my '98 D1. All accessible with the inner door card removed and winder mechanism removed.
Not sure what's available in the way of new OEM spares regarding these bits.

Well this is rather embarrassing I just nudge the switch to see if it will work by chance and it works again ? I dunno how to explain it. All the Windows function as if they never had an issue at all... Maybe they just needed to dry out from when I washed it at the car wash. I dunno it's really odd possibly they need to be lubicated but would gear oil work or something lighter like wd40 I think that would just last a few days tops though

Maybe need to do some strengthening exercises on that button pushing finger of yours!

Lol maybe. But it wasn't the switch I noticed in below freezing weather it worked fine. However it has a few problems when I first got home after several uses when it was above freezing it had some issues but after opening and shutting the door it seemed to go back to normal.
