Disco 1 strange behaviour?!

Hi, asking for a bit of advice on behalf of a friend. The motor in question is a disco 1 300tdi. The problem is the rev counter is jumping from 0 to idle whilst the battery light flickers? And if you stand outside of the vehicle you can hear a slight change in the engine noise, like a slight surge and then back to normal. Anyone any ideas?

Hi,

Load a vid to youtube and post the link ehre,

Have a look at the wires on the back of the alternator, make sure they are tight and in good knick, but last time I saw this the alternator was dying , replaced with a second unit and all was good.

rev counter is driven from the alternator, that would seem the most likely problem especially as light is flickering ,put a volt meter on earth and the b+ terminal and see what its producing

I'll put it to him. I'd like to think he's done this before he's got me to ask on here. It's being used on a day to day basis and the battery isn't showing any signs of giving up

Spray WD40 or similar in the back of the alternator to clear. Worked for me.
