So had a disaster yesterday. After a long day in a rush to head up north the fuel light came on in the Defender TD5. Filled the tank full with premium unleaded so mostly petrol in the tank minus whatever is in reserve when the light comes on.

I then drove several miles without realising my mistake. This became apparent as I approached the Fourth Road Bridge and the power started cutting in and out. Crossing the bridge lots of smoke from the exhaust. Just managed to make it across and on to the hard shoulder.

Toe truck drove me to a random garage where i dumped the defender quickly and ran for a train.

I don't really want this garage doing any work on it other than a drain and fuel filter change. I would rather get it back to the specialist in Edinburgh.

So what is the likley outcome here?Ive done some reading and seen some people have got away with it and just drained and changed the filter. What damage might i expect? It is a big milage engine 180k

if its done any damage it will be the injectors as theres no high pressure pump as each injector is its own pump unit injectors,id drain the system including head by removing switch on fpr then refill then see how it goes

Just got news from the garage and sounds like good news. Fuel drained, new filter and diesel added. Landy is running. All in £80. Will pick up tomorrow and see how well it is running.

Picked up the landy today. It's as if nothing happened. Running fine. Whilst I wouldn't recommend it, it seems that if you have a complete brain fart and put petrol in your TD5 you may well get away with it unscathed.
