Who here has the dimmer switch on their face lift freelander. I have the light level switch and on the other side I have the dimmer. It has never worked or lit up when I turn the lights on. The lights on the dash work fine. Anyway today I decided to investigate and found out why it does not work, there is no plug in the back of it. Is this a optional extra? Would the plug be in there somewhere?. Marty
 
Nothing for dimming on my 54 reg. But then there is so much other stuff missing on the S that I don't tend to miss altering the brightness of the dash lights.
 
Mmmmm this is a mystery. It is not even on the hse models.

I found this pic on the net (item 14) so the freelander did have one and it is not off another vehicle that just by chance fits in the hole. Must be something the last owner did, maybe. Ill investigate more this weekend. If there is no plug for it I suppose I have I blanking plate with a differance :)
 
The instrument dimming feature is on the Freelanders in the USA, but for some reason not in the UK.

It would be good to know why the UK missed out on this feature, even facelift MK1 HSE models don't have it, yet the 'variable illumination' is referred to in the UK vehicle manual. :wtf:

Hi.

With respect, I was refering to the 'not included' illuminated dial for the speedometer, not the headlamp level up/down switch (left of steering wheel).

For some reason the thumbwheel (on any MK1 Freelander in the UK) is not fitted with a speedo illumination wheel, and only a silver blanking plate in the facelift.

Due to this I ordered a switch, and I got my part delivered from America and see it has a space for plug on it with metal contact, meaning it must be functional.


I think the next step is to consider asking an American Freelander enthusiast (somehow) if their speedometer has a plug on the back to connect to this switch, and if so, can the UK car have one fitted?

I have on my iPad the US wiring diagram that has the dimmer wiring included. It looks simple enough to do. When I get home ill put a copy of it up.
 
Came across this wiring diagram for the 2002MY Freelander. Mentions a dimmer switch.

That is a different diagram than what I have. The switch on the face lift model has three wires. The pre face lift looks like one wire and at first chance looks easy to retro fit see as it is only one wire.
 
Old thread revival.
I fancy a dash dimmer but it looks like the UK Freelander missed out. I'm sure it would be an easy upgrade. The dimmer in my MGF looks exactly the same size as the blank in the Freelander dash.

I not long had the dash clocks off and there is no plug what so ever so it is going to have the be retro fitted. I have thought about but gave up with the fear of frying the wiring.

I'll post up the wiring instructions once I'm done.
The dimmer switch has only 3 connections. One connection is to earth for its own internal light, the other 2 connections splice into the dash light feed from fuse 15 or 17, I need to check which.
Watch this space.
