Hi all - help please. After mt transfer box siezed, i picked one up off ebay - a 1,22 ratio off a range rover. Mechanically its fitted ok but!!!, im having serious probs with the diff lock selector and am beginning to wonder if this box works differently to my old one.
Firstly, the diff lock lever seems to have 3 definite positions when operating it with a spanner at the box - pointing straight ahead and click positions to right and left - question - which positions should it be in for normal drive and diff lock? on the road it drives ok in all 3 positions, if i jack up one wheel only, i can spin the wheel with it in all 3 positions - Knackered lock?
Finally with the standard 90 box linkage, there is only enough travel to obtain 2 out of the three positions - oh and the warning light for diff lock now indicates that lock is to the right on the gear knob - not to the left as before - very confused and dissapointed!

the spinning wheel...thats because the diff in the wheel is doing it's job ;) as its a rangie one, wait for a rangie owner to find the thread then they might be abdle to shed some light on it ;) LRFE

Dont think youre right there young un! My understanding is that with diff lock engaged and 3 wheels on terra firma, it should not be possible to rotate the fourth

each axel has a diferential so that the two wheels can turn at different speeds when the vehicle is cornering. there is also a differential in the middle of the vehicle, in the transfer box. when this is locked it means that there is equal drive to front and rear prop. when the hand brake is engaged, this locks the rear prop. if any one wheel is jacked up then the diferential on that axel will turn allowing the wheel that is jacked up to turn. this should be the case unless you have lockers in the axels AS well as the transferbox locker. ;)

Hes quite right, its only a centre diff, it wouldn't save you if one side fell down a ditch...

The positions should be as follows. Bottom right: normal road driving high range, top right: low range.
Bottom left: highrange with diff locked, top left, low range diff locked...

I'm sure there was only two positions the lever on the box had there is a ball bearing type detent on the selector rod inside the box are you sure your not managing to get the ball on the raised bit between the grooves, and . Can't see that it's possible to get the linkage wrong way round so they're arse about face.

This is how mine is set up. http://www.landyzone.co.uk/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=7104
Lever to the left to engage difflock, to the right disengage.

The best way to see if its working is to jack both wheels on one axle up and try turning both wheels at the same time, if the diff is locked then you wont be able to turn them

Grunt - thanks for the pics - mine looks similar apart from actuator fork which is forged not pressed - my query is, from the position the lever on the box is in your pic - what i call the centre position, mine clicks an equall distance either way, but i can only get enough movement from the gear lever/selector to move it one click! your selector lever appears to be about middle - does it move the lever on the box to the left and right positions or just from centre to left or right? hope that makes sene!! thanks steve

PROBLEM SOLVED!! for anyone interested there was a simple solution - dont screw the diff lock switch in too far - this then impedes the diff lock carriage and wont allow the dogs to engage - i took my knackered one apart to see how it all worked - also explained why light wasnt working either!
The lever on the box btw moves from pointing forwards to pointing right when engaged.
And young un - i was right - with three wheels on the deck, in gear and diff lock engaged (when working!!) fourth wheel cannot be rotated.
Thanks all for your help. steve

Erm yes though maybe not.

Sorted marvelous 'cos I can't be arsed to work out your last post.

Will have to get the jack out and work out exactly will and won't turn with and without difflock. To be honest I was with the young 'un till your post saying otherwise, then I thought about it a bit and agree with you now!
