Are they the same?

My drain plug is very badly worn and the square is no longer square. Having just replaced my diff pan I have a spare fill plug that is in good condition. Can I use this as the drain plug?
 
You can buy a drain plug they cost diddly. The plugs are different metal and if I recall different size.
 
I know they are not expensive but I already have one of them so was hoping it would fit. I hjad vague memories of them being differant which is why I didnt want to just try it. What is the differance, is one of them a taper thread?
