It's dead easy ...
Remove the head and all the top end bits;
Remove the front end covers;
Remove the sump.
Then all the bits you need to get at are easily accessable.
All you have to do is remember which bits go back where! :) :)

I doubt I can replace the rear oil seals with that guide mate!:doh:

You didn't mention the rear crank oil seal!

You needs your gearbox off anorl to do that ;) ;)

Yep already know that - sorry my post in another area mentioned it - my bad.

Got a restored torque converter to install as well so I'm not too worried.

I've tried searching, but can't seem to find 2.5 strip and rebuild. I rebuilt my automatic gearbox back in May, so I'm not particularly worried about taking the work on.
Is there a guide out there somewhere to this kind of standard?

Hadn't planned on it this year jamesmartin, sadly cash is a bit tight - hoping to get a Turners job done on it next year. I really only plan on stopping it dripping this year, but will really wait and see what the motor looks like when it's open. It runs fine, but drips.

I'm sure that I'd read/heard somewhere that the old 2.5's cant be bored - have to be resleeved?

And are Turners any good?

you used to able to rebore to +60 iirc,but i think +40 is largest piston size now ,then you can sleeve and start at std again,what can turners do that you couldnt get done yourself, i dont know about where you are but rebore is only £120 ish here with the art been the honing to finished size ,cam bearings are easy enough to fit , heads arent difficult either

I've been recommended a couple of places around (Local Landrover boss didn't even know what a 12J was!!) but I have to be very careful - if a misunderstanding screws my block, I lose my Historical Vehicle rating.
I'm sure there is a company somewhere.

New pistons, pins, ANYTHING Landrover, I can get in Austria and I get a 10% discount and postage is cheap (www.teile.at) .

As I say - I will wait till I get the head off and see.........

Hello again!

So I've got the engine and gearbox out, and I'm now slowly dismantling the motor ready for cleaning and checking.
So far, I've noticed it has already had a re-bore (0.020) stamped on the piston crown.
I'm just about to de-coke the cylinder head.
Any suggestions on making the job easier? I've heard ATF works nicely - is that true? Or, do you have any other suggestions to make the job easier?

You can view all the pictures taken so far at the following https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.452682408170736.1073741849.276080389164273&type=3

any comments are welcome!

do you mean the hot-spots? manual says cracks to 8mm are ok - I'm actually planning on renewing those as the splits I can see are borderline.

My rebuild thread (link in my sig) has quite a few piccies and descriptive bits on rebuilding a 2.5N/A

Edit: I've put the bits relating to the engine in one thread in the 2.5 N/A forum
