Engine revs have been staying up on most but not all gear changes since I got the defender in May. Have read up about it and everything pointed towards the clutch switch. I had tried disconnecting plug and crossing plug without any change. Got time today to fit a new switch and it’s still the same. I don’t have a nanocom so can’t check for codes. Anyone have any other suggestions? I’m losing street cred doing trying to do big snorty launches up the village Main Street :(

The clutch switch is what I was going to say, but it sounds like you've already tackled that.

Having said that, I was only alerted to my clutch switch failing by the garage mechanic when I took it for an MOT once upon a time. Apparently it had been at fault for a while and I hadn't noticed. So my TD5's symptoms weren't actually that noticeable.

Another source of unexpected throttle responses is the accelerator pedal potentiometer. Usually this results in poor or no throttle response but can sometimes yield 'surges' in engine revs when lifting off. Once again a Nanocom or similar might shed some light on this. You should be able to see the three (or two on earlier models) voltages going up and down smoothly in response to the pedal, which can tell you whether it's doing anything odd, such as not returning to idle voltages straight away when you lift off.

Have you checked that the clutch switch you fitted is the correct one? The TDCi one is sometimes supplied by mistake, it looks the same but works the opposite way! So it wouldn't cure the fault.

I bought MSK500020G which I had read was the correct one but the one I removed was MSK100050. Have I maybe got the incorrect one after all?

I will have a look in the morning to see if the switch on my TD5 is normally open or normally closed, and report back.

Then you can check yours to see if you have the right one.
