Hello!

Wheely, my 1995 Defender converted to 6x4, is to undergone very soon a complete repaint and I am going to take the opportunity to change all the seals.

The seals I'd like to change are the following
  • front and rear door seals: I see there are 2 seals now on each, one attached on the door, and one attached on the body-work. Can you please specify which are the ones to be bought for the front doors and which ones for the back doors
  • front windscreen seal as it has been eating up by the Ghanaian sun
  • bulk-head seal between the windscreen and the vents- the one that can be seen in this pic (https://goo.gl/images/Ye7DNV)
  • vents seals: I see that there are ones made of rubber or made of foam - any preference?
  • door hinges seals (the plastic pieces that are between the door and the hinge) - worthwhile replacing these are well? (I will also be putting hinge-guards)
  • door handles worth doing?
  • any other bodywork seal that would be worthwhile replacing whilst I am at it?
I would love if you could confirm the part numbers and whether you suggest any particular type of them (with wire inside, material, etc..)

Does it rain much there?
The plastic pieces between the door hinges aren't so much seals. They do prevent metal to metal contact, but they affect how the door hangs and closes, so you will need to keep an eye on that. The way the door hangs affects the way it closes on the door seal!
 
Thanks much - i have left a message to Mike on his youtubechannel.

During rainy season it does rain cats and dogs or better suited for where I am: 'lions and giraffes'!

Besides the ones mentioned any other seal that I should replace whilst I am stripping the car for the paint-job?
 
Heya, After going through the whole parts book for body and chassis I think I identified pretty much all the parts I should change whilst stripping the car (about 20 parts). For the front door can you confirm that is just the weatherstrip and door sill seal? Mine currently has a 3rd seal as well but can't find it in the parts books (one attached to door, one to bodywork, and one to sill).

Some websites (LRdirect.com) state that the parts on lrseries.com are superseded with other parts that are still compatible with my type of defender (rather than the PUMA for example) - so I am now confused as to which part is best fit for my type of defender (VIN: TA975201), it'd great if you could confirm which one would be best suited:

  • Weatherstrip - front Door LH: either part number CFE102991 or LR077686 ?
  • Weatherstrip - front Door RH: either part number LR024956 or LR077683 or LR077684 ?
  • Weatherstrip - front Door LH: either part number CFE103011 or LR077683 or LR077684 ?
  • fillerstrip - Seal - Roof Side Moulding: 302178 or DBF500040? Also, would 1 meter suffice for both windows?
  • SEAL ROOF TO WINDSCREEN CORNER: MUC6400 or LR055343?
  • BULKHEAD TO WINDSCREEN SEAL - ADHESIVE FAJ100020 or LR055345
  • WINDSCREEN RUBBER SEAL MUC3733 or LR056278
  • rear window glasing strip MWC4772 or CGE500660
  • HARD TOP REAR GLASS SEAL FILLER STRIP 306289 or CHB500050
Also, this is the gasket from the door hinge to the bodywork (347369), are there no other gaskets/seals that need to be changed for the 4 hinges?

No, that's the ones.

any hints on where I can find some guidelines on how to replace these various seals?

To be honest, you find out how to fit them by taking the body apart and the old ones out! If the search function on the website is working again you'll be able to search for threads on removing each of the parts.
 
yeah - but since I am doing the work in Ghana and the workshop is not that experienced in Landys I would rather be sure to know what needs to be done in case they get stuck, rather than having to look into it if it's needed since there won't be time once started :) in the techarchive is there anything on this, especially the most difficult part like the bulkhead to windscreen seal...?

I read also that this seal is needed MRC8626 for Floor panel to panel seal, various applications inc gearbox tunnel to bulkhead, floor panel to seat base etc... on a 110 how many of these will be needed? each part is 1.6m long.

by inspecting the car yesterday I noticed there there are various seals between the lower body and the upper one (waist seal - point 2 and 3 in the pic- ) and rear body and roof( body to roof seal - point 4 and 5 in the pic ), and on top of the pillar between the doors (point 1 in the pic - part number not found yet...) - pics attached in detail and car-view - I didn't know they also had to be changed until I took another look at the car

- a shame 'cause I got the delivery from paddock already so might need to order this part separately and might delay the project since the car it's already at the workshop - or is there any creative solution for this (e.g. sikaflex)?

I found in the parts book of the 110 two different types of rear - uploaded both - can you confirm which of the part numbers highlighted in the pics the correct one for me?

Usually, the seal that runs along under the roof and seals to the top of the side panels, where you have numbered 1 to 5 to 4 and then around the corner to the door, is all one continuous seal. Likewise, the seal that runs along the top of the tub and seals to the bottom of the side panels, where you have numbered 2 to 3 and around the corner to the door , is also one continuous seal. I've no idea if there is anything manufactured for the double rear axle ones, or if people buy three and use one to cut lengths off to join on to the others!?
 
yeah hard to tell - i guess cutting to fit would be sufficient - can you confirm if the part number i have circled in red are the right ones? - found 2 pages in the parts book that seem for the same part but have different numbers..
In case it would take too long for paddock (and the others) to ship to me - do you think applying sikaflex would still do the job or I would regret it in the near future?

They look like they will be the correct ones for a standard 110!
I'm sure you know, but a quick reminder on the part numbers and VIN codes. Your 1995 vehicle should have an M in the VIN code for the model year eg
1993 = K
1994 = L
1995 = M
etc
an A after the letter code means it was made in Solihull, so from KA means fits vehicles from 1993. It looks like you are drawing a ring around the correct ones.
Another thing to remember is that these seals are handed, ie there's a right hand and a left hand one for either side of the vehicle. The ones that go around the corners to the back door.
Someone more knowledgeable about part numbers may be able to advise further.

You notice the 2 pages of the part book have for the ALR5055 and the ALR5054 for what seems the right piece - and by looking on lr-series, brit-car, etc.. the description of the part is not clear - in your opinion which one would fit right (taking into account anyway some fidgeting will be required)?

Hmmm............... good question. IIRC when I did my 90 a few years back the bottom seal was like ALR5055 which was a soft compressible 'foam' material. Like this

The cut out 'half circle' was to enable it to be bent around the back corner.
The upper seal, just under the roof, was a more solid rubber variety.

yeah - the only difference across the two pages is that the ALR5055 is in the '110 station-wagon' page and the ALR5054 is under the '110 Hard-top' page...however strange that it also fitted your 90 if it's meant to be for the station wagon.... uhm....:confused:

No, we're just looking at 110 seals and part numbers for you.
For my 90 it was part number ALR5056 :)

brit-car might have the wrong name/label on the website! There's no picture to go off either, so you would be taking a chance.
My bottom seals were soft foam, as above picture.
My top seals were firm rubber like this

With the 90 degree bend moulded in, which is why they are handed.
 
The funny part is that the top seals are the same across the two pages (MXC 3685 AND MXC 3684), it's the so called waist seal that is different....:mad:

looking at the picture it seems that the ALR5055 the '110 station-wagon' model which normally has 2 row of doors and has only one large window behind... whereas the ALR5054 is on '110 Hard-top' which has 1 row of doors only and 2 smaller windows.

mine has 2 row of doors and 2 big windows but I guess originally had 1 big window (assumption) so based on this I'd go for the ALR5055.... HOWEVER also LR-series says that ALR5054 is from vin KA925390 to 1A615245 and that the ALR5055 is up to vin KA925390... but alike brit-car there are no pictures here as well :eek:

Anyway clearly there is no such part available as mine it's a conversion, hence will need to chop the original part in multiple pieces - so as long as the material and width/height of the part is correct I'll be fine - do you see any reasons why the material and width/height will differ across the two parts?

The difference between the 110 with second row of doors and the 110 hard top with just the front door is that the upper seal does not go across the doors. So, that seal on the hard top will be longer to go across where the second door would have been.
