Being a (petrol) series owner for several years I am now completely broke. I have started a new business and don't want to become white van man, so am interested in trading in for a disel defender. Any advice on fuel economy would be much appreciated.

I worked my fuel consumtion out after someone asked a similar question but I've forgotten what it was now. However I think you'll find that the more you drive it the more fuel you use. Hope this is of some help.

i've got a lr 90 1989 2.5 td and I get about 25mpg to 27 on a long run, however I am sure the newer TD5 might give you about 27/30mpg. i guess it depends on heavy your right foot is!!

I have an '05 TD5 90 XS and it has done a steady 25mpg for the first 1k miles.

Cruising above 70 seems to have a marked effect on the economy - and your ears.

I am reasonably heavy with the right foot though. :D

my 300 tdi double cab returns about 30mpg........cruises nicely around 70/75 mph on a long run

sorry, in the land of km per litre it's 11km/litre of diesel on my 02 td5. have to be gentle on the right foot though. usually crusing on the highway. anything above 110km/h does make it drink.

I run a 200TDI to work and back i get about 25mpg round town and 27ish sometimes on a run, Depending on how i thrash it :)

My 300TDi gets between 28/30 mpg depending how i push it. Will cruise down the motorway happily at 70-75 but is faaaaaaaaaaaar more efficient at 60-65.

Thanks for all the replies!

Looks like it might be a white van after all. aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhh:(

Check out the economy carefully on the vans as I use hire ones for work and have to ree fill them. I put in about 15p per mile for transit size. Escort ones are much better prety much like a car.

The big downer about vans is there is only 3 seats and they are not very pleasent at the weekends. Trying to get a van into a multistory car park is interesting and driving them off road!!! I don't think so!

Have you tried to get a Std 90 on 235/85 tires into any multi-storey car park?? Most are 6ft 4 to 6ft 6 in height and mine won't fit!!! :(

What really ****es me off is the Bucks forest parks all have 6ft 6 height barriers to their car parks - so if you want to go for a walk you either have to take the small car or park outside (which ****es them off :p). Something about trying to keep out the gypos.

At least it's doing miles to the gallon rather than the other way round!

I've got a 1991 defender 90 but with a 2.5 petrol engine and it seems to de drinking the stuff. I've changed the wheels back to standard ones (did have huge mud ones which I'll keep for a rainy day) and also had it lpg converted so is cheaper to run but I reckoned I was getting less than 15mpg - not good as you watch the fuel gauge drop! Hopefully with the new wheels it isn't so bad, but does anyone with a 2.5 petrol get anything different? (My IIa ambulance was soing better mpg and thats 36 years old!)

dont think theres many white vans getting more than 30mpg?
(transit size).

My really knackered old 2.5D Transit used to do about 30mpg, despite it's 186k on the clock, but when I bought a nice shiny VW LT28 it nearly killed me in fuel costs. I never got round to working it out as I was too scared to! I sold it after only a few months because it was just costing me too much to run - was nice and fast tho compared to the trannie!

Matt.

i once drove a vw lt/something luton size van. it was the slowest van ive ever driven in my life. london to leeds. thought i was never going to get there!
