hello peeps, i have my heart set on buying a defender as my first car :) i'm coming up to 21, and only just learning to drive but i just thought id ask around to see if i can really get a defender, my driving instructor wasnt sure...

anyway, i found a pretty nice defender i can afford at the top here:

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WW...&miles=40&max_records=50&modelexact=1&photo=1

how much do you think it would cost me to insure something like this? (uk) thanks for any advice.

also, are there any good tips you would throw at me for buying an old defender since i plan to restore it? thanks alot! :)

well, i am in the same situation... i am 16, going to try and get myself insured on our kitted out 90. called up everywhere, no one would ensyre me. one said £2000 but i hung up straight away! however NFU said they would insure me off mum's insurance, for £600/yr, so we are going to have to do it that way. it is very hard for a first driver to be insured on a l/r but it is possible. mate, i hope this helps, but do give EVERY insurance group a call, they might give you an incredible quote you never know till you call, it should be easier for you, because you are 21.... there are lots of good tips for buying defenders, and everyone you talk to will give you a new one. and dents or scrathces dont really matter, as these are great haggling points... check for rust, rust is BAD. but if you want to restore it, you can always get rid of rust ;) are you sure you want to buy a defender and not a series landy? series landys are more fun to restore, but i think defendeers have more class! each person thinks differently though!! where are you from? Rob

i'm living in plymouth, uk :) someone from another forum told me i can get insured with CIS Insurance for £425 on my dad's name, so i'll definatly do something like that :) and aye, definatly fallen for the defender hehe! probably wont be able to restore it anytime soon, but i suppose eventually i might feel brave and get as much info as i can from these forums hehe, cheers for the reply mate.

Hiya.. Looking at the link the one at the top was not a defender! Assuming you mean this one

LAND ROVER 90 2.5 DIESEL,
B reg. T Cab, power steering, body straight, 12 months MOT,. £1,800. ono.

The difference being its engine, the Defenders started with the 200TDI (then 300TDI and now TD5). So don't expect it to be as quick as newer ones. If you are going to use it as your main car you might want to look towards getting a 2.5TD as they are a bit more lively!!

That said there is nothing wrong with them , just as long as know it really will be quite sluggish!! But look on the bright side, if this idiotic road charging scheme comes in you can just bung a V8 in!!

Andy

yes, i heard bout that road changin scheme, i THOUROUGHLY disagree, but it would be cheeper to run my defender :) and andy, i might be dreaming, or going mental, but that link does go straight to the landrover... i dunno what link you clicked on?? anyway, yes, it is that one (i think)
