Just bought a 90 turbo on a 1988 e reg,it had a broken timing belt renewed by previous owner, but few weeks later a loud knocking noise,I have taken the rocker shaft and push rods out and can see one of the followers is broken.can anyone advise me if its possible to take the turbo unit off with the cylinder head or will i have to take the inlet manifold and turbo off first.thanks

By the time you've undone the oil feeds/return from the turbo, you may as well undo the inlet/outlet manifold & exhaust, 13mm (1/2" ) socket and they're off, less weight on the head when moving it anorl. It's all bolts ( or should be ) so no studs sticking out the head and away you go, the turbo and manifolds are a heavy combination so less weight helps ;)

Stick a bucket underneath the waterpump outlet to the rad and loosen the pipe, this'll clear the head of water before removal.

In theory you can, but in practice the cylinder head is very very heavy for one guy to lift( i have done it)
I would recommend taking the manifolds off only take 10 -15 mins.

When the timing belt jumped on my old TD engine i found that apart from a slightly bent push rod that the tappet sliders which are brass were knackerd and the rest were well worn, Straight forward job to change.
I still have a spare head in my shed if you need it but im in sunny scotland

so once the head is off how do i replace the brass coloured slide, anythinh i should watch for

undo tappet locating bolt remove brass follower ,using magnet remove roller then pull out sleeve check its not worn were brass follower rubs, when refiiing drop sleeve all way down drop in roller fit brass follower with letter f to front then pull sleeve carefully up enough to replace locating bolt,if you dont push sleeve futher down than it is secured you run risk of roller getting stuck in cam gallery

Im sure the haynes book of lies tells you to use a piece of wire to pull them up i just used a screwdriver. But it is very common for the sliders to wear and also for the push rods to wear them off to one side,
