I have just replaced the 2.5td 19J in my 1988 90 with a 200tdi and when the ignition is turned off it keeps on running. But when the pump wire is removed it cuts out . Also it will cut out with the key if you cut it out soon as it starts but when it's been revved up it won't shut down via key

Old engine was 19j td
New engine genuine defender 200 tdi with tdi engine harnes plug and play as I thought but now this fault has peed me off a little as I no nothing about electrics hope some 1 on here has had this problem and can help me fix mine many thanks dan

Yup sounds like it's wired up wrong or has a fault. So it's hooked to a constant live rather than an ignition live. the white wires should be an ignition live, if you want to hook one of them up when you place trace the wire.

Yes can't remember exactly what the problem was but basically wrong wire on alternator terminal so was powering the start stop solenoid .

o_O

Rite guys have swapped alternator with my spare and still the same prob . The engine came complete with wiring harnes still attached to engine so all I have done is plugged in and bolted wire to starter we're was needed

Would you say I should put my 19j lume and extend temp sender wire as it's at rear of engine and 200 is front ?

Also the 3 wires for alternator 2 of the 3 are live when key is out and not on

the thick brown ones? that's because they connect to your battery.

do you have a multimeter? go stick it on your fuel pump solenoid wire.

double check it's getting volts even with the key out (which is wrong). if so then follow that wire back, looking for issues.

also check the ignition switch is working as it should be, they can often go.

to do that stick the multi on the pins and make sure the ign live one stops getting power when the ign is off

do you have a multimeter? go stick it on your fuel pump solenoid wire. I've been using a probe earth to engine and pin to stab wire

double check it's getting volts even with the key out (which is wrong). if so then follow that wire back, looking for issues. When the ignition is on the probe lights up and when ignition is of the bulbs goes of on probe

also check the ignition switch is working as it should be, they can often go. I'm guessing it's working as it was fine before I swaps engine

to do that stick the multi on the pins and make sure the ign live one stops getting power when the ign is off
.

The only way I can cut it out is to remove pump wire or remove alternator plug when ign is off

Multimeter is showin 2v on pump solenoid wen ign is off

funsies, go take your dash console out and look at the wires stuck on the back of the ignition.

iirc, the ign live and interior lights run off the same contact.. i'm a bit fuzzy, have a look.

anyway, pull them off the spades and stick a multi on the spade. does it get a reading? might as well check for non with ign off and 12v with it ign on.

if not then the current is coming from elsewhere, so stick the multi on the wires you just pulled off, see if one is kicking out juice.

Ign is working fine just done what you said and correct powering when on . And none when off . I'm confused it was perfect before engine swap

2v from white /black wire on ign .

sorry bit confused.

is it like the left pic? when you pull the black/white wire off and then measure the voltage of the black/white wire.. it reads 2v?

but the 3 term spade that the wire plugs into is 0 when ign off and 12v when ign on?

we'll get there, it'll just take a bit if it's not infront of me :)

Found a temp fix lol I previous owner had rigged a wire from gin to starter so I used the wire and put it on pump / and other end were the white/ black would be and now it's fine .. For now that is :)
