Im looking into getting new wheels and tyres for my defender 90. im looking to stick a set of 265/75R16 tyres on some 16X8 new wheels. ive heared people have problems with tyres rubbing on the radious arms and such. would they be fine or would you advise buying offset wheels?

thanks in advance

Ben

I've had bigger and never had any problem's ;)

well... if it makes a rubbing sound when you turn, then turn the steering wheel a bit less...
also true haha but i think most people would prefaire to get the right wheels first time round :) this is my first land rover so im not too sure on what size will be fine on an unmodified defender

dnt bother with massive tyres - it will hammer your poor swivels, wheel bearings, props etc. I run 235/85 16s on mine, no lift. The only real mod to my steering is deeper dished wheels and then removed lock stops, so that i can get much tighter cornering for trials. An my tyres dnt rub.

265 wide tyres wnt help you get most places, knowing how to use the landy would be better. :)

first landrover are there to be used as curb stones mod them big time then when you get a new one your be bord of modding and want to keep it standard (ish);)

as for tyres 265 75 16 is from what i gather the choice from most ;)

just not me :D i have 305 70 16 on i believe standard modulars and they just catch the radias arms but having sed that i really dont notice it any more you learn not to use full lock;) but before my 90 was lifted 2" the rear tyres would catch the plastic arch not mega but enough to get on your nerves

but if i was in the market to buy a new set of tyres i think id choose either a smaller profile of what i have now (hankook rt03 mt)of bf goodrich mud terrains
and fit them to black modulars there cheap wheels and looks the nadgers ;)

sound advice. cheers :D

i dont think ill be doing any harsh offroading at first. as long as i can get down a dirt road with deep pot holes. my poor punto is destroyed lol or even cross fields. in the near future i may try green laneing, it looks good fun

thanks for the reply :) when you put the 2" lift on did you have replace the radius arms as well?

If you want 265s, and looking for new wheels then you got it right in your first post - check the offset of your new wheels.

Youv'e got two options (to avoid spacers or other mods):

(a) find someone with exactly the same wheels and tyres and they say they fit well and youve seen the pics and they loook good. By far the easier method.

(b) do it scientifically - find out the width & offset of your current wheels and compare this with the new ones your considering. By looking at back and front spaicng you can see where the new rims will sit. From what i've seen, in the ~8" width you can get offsets from 0mm to +25mm.

If your looing for allys, I did some reseach into offfset of common aftermarket brands - can send you this if it would help.

btw with 265s you are also have the option of 7" wide rims.

But forget all that and get much bigger feet:D - why do you want your poor little tyres looking overhwelmed by that big Landy!

sound advice :) thanks for the reply. i do want big wheels but just nothing too big. the wheels that are on my 90 are a 15" rim. but im looking to put 16" on so i can give the diffs that extra inch off the floor. you neevr know when ye gunna hit a hole in the long grass ha ha

Plenty of excellent second hand Land Rover alloy wheels on ebay..... when I bought my 110 in March it had no spare wheel.
I bought the Land Rover wheel on ebay for £11, paid £10 for it to be delivered, bought a new Runway Enduro A/T 265/75 R16 (not bad but not the best) to match the other 4 tyres/wheels.
So for about £100 you can get a good set of 5 genuine Land Rover alloys and choose what ever tyres you want.
The pic shows my spare with standard wheel nuts holding it gently in place (just for the pic).... this is a big no no! I have since picked up 3 stainless capped used Land Rover alloy wheel nuts for £1 each + pp again off ebay.

Hmm, I got a strange feeling there will be a set of five LR Boost alloys (16" x 7") shod with nearly new BFG AT tyres listed on ebay at 7PM this evening - don't know why but I just feel it in me water :D (tyres are only 235 wide though)

yeah i been shopping round on ebay as well. only problem all the sellers are too far and no one is willing to have them delivered to me. i had my eye on the wheels and tyres i wanted as well but they wouldnt send them up :(

if ya want maximum diff clearance the only way to achieve this is with tyres, body lift and suspension lifts will not give any more clearance..

the thing that most often gets ya stuck is the diffs grounding out..

i started with standard 205 tyres,,,then put 236/85/16 ats on,,,then 265/75/16 insa turbos,,,then simex 35/10.50/16...i now have 35/11.50/15 silverstone extreme...
