Hi All!
I have recently picked up a genuine 200tdi defender engine.

I am planning on changing the timing belt, water pump etc before the install for peace of mind.

I have the timing belt kit and water pump, plus gaskets etc....

Now I am aware that I need to remove Crankshaft pulley but with the engine on a stand and without an impact gun or air gun how would you guys go about removing pulleys? (Cant lock engine with gearbox or use starter to break free) oh and also refitting ... as I've heard it pays to change front oil seal while there.

Any other advise is highly welcomed :) Many thanks in advance
 
You should still be able to lock the flywheel with a pin but i don't think your engine stand will take kindly to you swinging off a 6' bar.

Maybe hiring a decent electric impact would be your best bet

Edit: to refit I would wait til the engine is fitted to tighten it up
 
Have you already got it on the stand? If not lie it on its side and connect a battery to use the starter motor may work.
 
Use a piece of angle iron and make a locking tool to lock the flywheel on the starter teeth, it's no drama if it's not timed when you crack the bolt just so long as you time it before you strip it down.
 
Do it once the engines in. Access is fine with r radiator out. As kev12 said tightening the new pull up correctly will be an issue
 
As a matter of interest the spring seat from a 90 has the exact same diameter hole in it as the crank bolt and fits over it perfectly.
I made a locking tool by drilling 4 holes in the spring seat to bolt it where the pulley goes and welding a long bar to it to rest on the chassis.
No pics I,m afraid cos I made a haines of the welding when I ran out of gas so Its a total embarrasment, it does however work perfectly well.......

I think I may wait until engine is fitted before i change belts. Seems a lot easier and as you say.... will be able to tighten up bolt properly.

I have noticed however that the PAS pump pulley has a little bit of back n forth play, is this an issue? also I have noticed that the alternator is not exactly straight in line, I'll post a pic
