Defender 200tdi overheating

Hello, my Defender 90 200tdi has suddenly started to violently overheat. After a very shot trip of only abound 8 miles, the expansion tank had been completly drained, including the pipes. The temp guage was in the red zone and when idling the engine was very smokey. There does not appear to be any water leaks, it just dissapears. Any ideas as to what this could be?

Head gasket?

Is the smoke white? As in steam.

The smoke is coming out of the exhaust, that is, and it is white / very pale grey in colour

I'm not much of a mechanic, is this a huge job? Or can it be done at home fairly easily?

me and a mate did mine at home not a hard job just a ball ache satisfing when you do it your self

It can be done at home fairly easily by someone with reasonable mechanical knowledge, start reading manuals etc familiarize yourself with what's involved, then decide if you want to tackle it.

If you're not a confident mechanic, get someone else to do it.
