Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have always wanted a Defender 110, but want some advice which engine type/ model is best/ reliable?, which one do you recommend?

Hi and welcome!

It depends on your budget and what you want. Do you want a station wagon or a utility variant? Hard top of Truck cab? Soft top? A project or mint condition one? Do you mind doing your own maintenance?

A Tdi is simpler in terms of ease of maintenance but older technology. ATd5 can be tweaked more easily for performance. The Tdci models are later technology still, using the transit engine. Again, performance upgrades are available.

Buy on condition and not age. Higher mileage isn’t necessarily an issue, you could find a low mileage one that has had a hard life. Check for evidence that it has been looked after unless you don’t mind doing work yourself. The biggest problem areas are the chassis and bulkhead. Check these for rust. They can be changed but at quite a cost. Also check engine and chassis numbers match and do a HPI check. These vehicles are very popular with thieves sadly. Whatever you buy, invest in some decent security for it.

If you haven’t had one of these vehicles before, I’d suggest driving one first. They are totally different to your usual cars and not everyone’s cup of tea.

Whatever you buy, don’t forget some pics.
