I've just bought a 200tdi (auto) discovery as a doner car for my Defender 90 (19j) for 600

i really want a manual, but a mate has offered to take the 200tdi engine and autobox in exchange for his 300tdi with manual box. both have done roughly 150k and both give a little puff of black smoke on start up then run clear.

am i better off with a 200tdi and the box off my 19j or a 300tdi with the box it comes with (pretty sure reverse is in a different place to my 19j box)

i'm also going to rape and pillage the disco for axles etc, everything else off it will be sold on with first dibs on here.

You don't want the gearbox at all if it's out of a disco it's too long to fit a defender. and you end up with the gear lever stuck up thru the seat box. your gearbox is fine connected to the 200tdi engine.,. BUt if you can do a swap for the 300 then go for it as it fits in the engine bay much better than a 200tdi does.

200 with standard box will be easiest conversion.

the 300tdi will be lifted straight out of another 90, i should have made that clearer sorry.

take the 300 and box then.
