Disco 4 (LR4) D4 Starting Problem

Some more info - this morning, the car started fine but dropped into limp mode during the journey with loads of warning messages (ABS Fault, Stability control not available, EBD Fault, Emergency brake assist not available, Fuel level low, Suspension fault, Engine temperature indication fault, Gearbox fault, HDC not available, Charging system fault, Terrain response special programs not available). Speedo and rev counter reading zero even though I was still driving along.

When I got home, the engine didn't stop when I pressed the stop button. It eventually stopped when I pressed and held it in for a few seconds. After that, the car was dead and would not restart, like in my original message.

hi and welcome

if i may say , is to ensure first both ur batteries are ok, otherwise they can throw up some serious faults

have u got any fault codes plse

is urs the 8 x speed auto

thks

The main seems okay (12.6v). I didn't know there was another battery - where is it?

I don't have a code reader - what would you recommend?

Thanks

hi

u have the main battery and the other one is for the stop start

best code reader to get is one made by Gap called the iid, currently are £420 and can use it via ur phone or ipad through bluetooth , have enclosed the link

https://www.gap-diagnostic.com/products/iidtool/

will save u a lot of time , as these are complicated a code reeder is a must and pay for them sevlves very quickly

cheers , so has the rotary dial

there’s been reports of faulty stop start switches , however as u had so many faults come up it can be something as simple as an earth wire leading onto a bad connection, bad battery

the stop start battery is an AGM battery , then u have the main battery

so indeed have to ensure 100% they are in perfect working order and also the alternator is doing it’s job

hope that helps a little

Rotary dial, yes.

It doesn't have stop start. I think that came in a little after I got mine, so I assume I just have the single battery.

apologises , i’m not 100% with how they changed within that year

with the D3 and D4 indeed first place to start is the battery and is perfect , however getting codes will give u a far better indication, cheaper and less inconvenient in the long run, saves ur sanity as well, lol

ie, if the alternator is playing up it can take the battery out and do a lot of damage

also check here for a further extensive library of information

hope that helps abit and please let us know how u get on

Only true way to test the battery is to let it stand over night and then measure the voltage without unlocking the car and waking it up.
Have you checked the battery terminal clamps? they might appear tight but loosen the clamps nuts and lightly tap the clamp down then retighten.

5 years from a D3/4 battery would be considered pretty good.

There is also a large back fuse widget on the battery pos terminal and another down near the gearbox, I think theres a maxi fuse in there, but it may explain the heat issue?
Im sure Ive read of people having issues with the gearbox one on D3 creating smoke and causng various issues, not sure if D4 has the same but got to be worth a look.

Also worth checking what the charge rate is.

Im not sure but you do need to measure the voltage after standing for a period of time to get an idea, but even that is not a definitive test as I had two truck ones the other day and they were both in the 12.50 volt range so good enough, but when tested they managed 700 amps each and they were meant to be 1100 amps.
If you take it anywhere they will almost certainly start with the connections and the battery itself and go from there.
