Apart from the cam belt & idler pulleys (and engine oil/filters) what else should be done/adjusted/replaced on the D4 SD 3.0v6? I’ve decided not to have my eyes taken out by the MD’s from now on & so will be doing the work myself. I want to do the job right so need a List of jobs, a strategy/time line so the work can be prioritised & budgeted for. Also what would be a decent code reader/rester/service light putter outer that will do more than just engine codes? Don’t want a £20 eBay special but don’t want a snap on/never recoup the outlay device either

Gap IID is the go to diag tool.

Have no idea on the D4 service, but think big service on D3 was all trans oils oils/cam/hpfpbelt and the accessory belt.
Whilst doing the belts it may pay to do the water pump as well?

Gbox oil Mannol AG60
Diffs syntrax, if rear has Ediff different oil again
Tfer box genuins l/r oil only (50 quid) Iirc
Coolant, ant quality OATS spec will do

Hi mate

plus 1, alas AG60 is for the 8 x speed , can’t remember if the OP has 6/8 speed gearbox

@Chad66

the mannol ATF is the one to get and a lot cheaper , many of us use that , AG55 for 6 x speed , AG60 for the 8 x speed

if it’s a 6 x speed can buy 10 x litres for around £50 from Germany , I’ll find the link when I know what one u have

few details for u , also a service sheet for the D4 , what year is urs please, ie 6/8 speed , thks

if u do ur fuel belt at the back of the engine please don’t forget that’s timed on the D4

hope it helps

Found the link ref ATF oil

https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/lubriagecarpartsaccessories

Also if I may add and not telling u how to suck eggs but are u aware that checking the ATF oil Level needs the engine running and transmission at the correct temp

plus 1 , the gap iid, won’t need another diagnostic reader as it does everything , will pay for itself very quickly

Thanks for the response everyone This sure is a lot of oil to be replaced! Definitely going to block the drain on my neighbours drive! (only joking)
My car is November 2011 6 speed auto.
Those code readers can be obtained for <£400. That’ll make an excellent wedding anniversary present for my wife this September.
I’m not looking forward to that rear belt.. accessing it seems a nightmare!
If anyone is passing Middlesbrough and needs something to do during the lockdown... I’ve got a big kettle and a garage now I know I can get my car into it!!

Being 9 yrs old, are you sure the big service has not already been done? Iirc 7yrs or 110k, whichever comes first.

6 speed is easy to do, see D3/4 forum and search for Filos gearbox oil change, basically remove oil cooler pipe, start engine oil pumped out, refill with exact amount through cooler (engine off), job done, 30/40 mins max.

If playing big time on the IID you will need some sort of battery trickle charger, otherwise you will kill the cars battery, okay for quick check type plug in, but otherwise charger needed for longer sessions.

Are you referring to the engine oil Gstuart? Engine running when changing the oil?

hiya

apologises , just re worded it better , u need the engine running to check the ATF oil level and refit the filler plug around 35-40c

NO!!!
The gearbox!! You are using the pump in the gearbox to pump the old fluid out, and the new in.

I personally prefer to do a partial drain on a older gearbox, just in case it has clutch pack issues. ;)

beat me to it, lol

plus 1, I also prefer to just get the ATF hot and then drain it , refill , run for around 500-1,000 miles then do it again

personally I’m also not keen on powerflushing

I was taking the Michael! Thanks for the suggestion on powered flushing

So, out of curiosity I called Ripon Landrover to price the oils:
Total cost including engine oil, power steering fluid, Transmission fluid, X2 diffs, Trans box, (No brake fluid or coolant)
£568! atf is £28 p/l. diff oil £23 p/l +vat.
Nice to have a comparison tho!

So not buying it then:D

I contacted my local independant LR garage PVH Landrovers Stokesley. I wanted the book the car in to get the oil changed in the auto box (because it should be flushed out, otherwise only 60% of the oil actually he’s replaced, so I keep reading!) and the oil changed in the transfer box whilst it was in there. Incredibly, this PVH landrovers refused to do either of these jobs unless I booked the car in for a full service! So it’s not what the customer wants, it’s what they want do. Incidentally I pressed for some prices: service A- (just engine oil and filter, £390 + vat. If they ‘were’ to replace the oils in the transfer case, that would be an extra £340 + vat. But they’d only do that with a B service. Because this service includes air filter and pollen filter. But they also visually look at everything, and spray oil on the door hinges... it seems some of the established independents are getting ver picky and VERY greedy. £876 for a basic oil change in for the engine & transfer case Remember, this isn’t even a full service!

60 percent changed annually or biannually will do the job just fine.

People are obsessed with changing 100 percent fo the oil, but this does not happen when you do an engine oil change.

The LR service schedule indicates an auto box oil change at 140k, even though the gearbox manufacturer state ‘sealed for life’.

Therefore a change at 100k certainly won’t harm. I do however believe that if it’s going to get changed, I’m going to get it flushed to do it properly. It seems to be the way according to the auto gearbox specialists. I acknowledge this may be in their best interests too, but I’m not a an auto transmission expert‍♂️

Iirc ZF reckon 45 or 60k is when they need an oil change, it is the car makers who quote the silly miles for oil changes, though in their defence it only has to be okay for 100k and after that they are not going to care!
