Morning all - I'm an old member who has not posted for quite some time, so will you please bear with me if this has already been done to death, but . . .

I have a 2001 TD4 which has recently developed a cv joint type "click" when turning a sharp corner, but not on every corner. The car is in my local garage at the moment, and the guy working on it is not convinced that it is actually the cv joint at fault - I've asked him to change it anyway, in order to eliminate it from the equation.

So my question is - if it is NOT the cv joint, what could it be ? Am I looking at an IRD problem ?
It's the nearside front, by the way

Thanks

MJTee

When I think of CVs 'going' - I usually think of the outer one - but frequently/usually the threads on the forum show that it is the inner CV that goes. If your guy was checking the outer, he may have overlooked the inner.

Is he replacing a CV or the driveshaft? Once again, 'usually' people replace the driveshaft. Be careful with which one you choose - you can get aftermarket driveshafts that are dirt cheap - but they do not last very long at all - you will be back getting it changed in a matter of months not years.

Edit : Should say these are my observations from forum threads - others may have other views.

Thanks for the input, Grumpy !! After talking to the mechanic yesterday pm, I decided that it was just not worth changing the cv/driveshaft on spec - we were both certain in our own minds that it was not really the cv joint at fault, but that there was certainly a "something" not right. So I bit the bullet, arranged finance, and went out and bought an FL2 !!

So - if anyone is interested, I now have for sale a 2001 TD4, 3-door, sub-160000 miles - and cheap, make me a reasonable offer - and yes, I do know that the market value is very low !!

Potentially expensive click to fix !! Needed towcar for next week, taking 'van down to Llanwrst - even if IRD and vcu fitted, no guarantee of a fix, was going to change for 70th birthday next May anyway, so just did it early

do you know I did very much the same when I had my old 2001 td4 I went into the local steelers for the metal pipe around the back of the engine as it had a water leek I could loose a header tank full in half a mile but then I would not loose any over say 200 miles it was very odd and I got the son in law to look he said he could see when it had left a trail down the engine block so I thought buy new but I came out with a 2006 hse , also when looking at cv joints if you get a knock when turning left it will be the right one and vise versa .
