Hi guys,

I am in big trouble - been doing a water pump + p-gasket change on my girlfriend's brothers TDi300 and I have sheared off one of the black coolant drain plugs (the type in the top of the thermostat housing and radiator).

I am on my way up to Newcastle this afternoon and he will be left with a car he can't drive (problem for him getting to work!)

Wondered if anyone in the area might have a spare black plastic coolant plug - I would drive to them and pay them generously for it!

Please let me know asap!

Cheers,

David

Am I right in thinking that its a 1/4" BSP thread?

If its the one Im thinking of, we replaced one on my mates car with a standard plumbing fitting a while back. I cant remember what it was exactly, and I havent got a 300 near enough to try to get back to you in time. I remember it was one of my brass stop-ends though. He still runs it now and has had no problems since.

But B&Q is open today as far as I know. Try them.

Or if you fancy a longer drive, I have loads. But Im in Northampton, so probably best to try and get to your local B&Q.

Good luck, sorry I cant help more.

looks like domestic radiator bleed valve (towel rail or similar)

Panic over for now guys, and want to say a very sincere thanks for all the offers - it says a lot about the sense of community on this forum! :)

I have managed to get the existing plug back together by drilling the head of it, and putting a nut, bolt and a pair of washers to hold the plug head and the threaded section together, as the threads are actually OK - the head came off! I have also liberally applied some RTV sealant to make it as waterproof as possible. Brass plugs are on order!

Cheers again,

David

it is a standard household radiator air bleed plug. about £1.99 from B&Q. with a bit of luck yu get a bleed key thrown in as well. Means yu can bleed the air out when the system is hot and engine running anorl :D.
