A quick google images search doesn't bring too many pictures back that would indicate this is commonly done.

I've just successfully used an old belt wrapped as shown to get all the pulley nuts loose on my 300tdi, including the gnarly crank nut. I'll use the same to do it up again when the timing cover gasket arrives...

Make sure you use a chassis part as a stop for the bar used in the belt loop.
 
Looks like a good idea, however when you are loosening / tightening the bolt using that method you are putting all the torque through the rubber dampener which wont do it any good (especially with the amount of torque you need to do the nut up properly) and may cause it to fail prematurely as it will be circa 20 years old already. The correct tool holds the centre of the hub so nothing goes through the rubber. HTH
 
It acts as a sort of shock absorber to reduce crankshaft vibrations from the firing pulses being passed on to the serpentine belt and alternator / pumps etc
 
But TBH,

I did just use the breaker bar against the chassis, with the fuel solenoid disconnected to undo, and then diff lock engaged someone stood on all the pedals. and tightened it to spec.

..... through two already flexible belts... But I get it.

Its not top of the priority list at the minute though. New P gasket, new rad, new intercooler, egr blank off, new lift pump, new air and fuel filter all need their combined effects confirming before moving deeper inside to see why I need my foot into the carpet to get the bugger to move off the line. I knew it was not going to go like my Aero, but hey... this bad ?

(Not tweaked the fuel delivery screws yet. Turbo has vertical play as well and not checked for exhaust gas in the coolant yet either.)

If you are going to start playing with the fuel pump, then you might want to think about two things.

1) Getting a boost pin. ( before yu change anything)
2) Fitting an EGT gauge before you start messing about.

In a few weeks time I'm lifting the engine out for a rebuild. Should I loosen the crank nut/pulley while the engine is still in the vehicle? The engine will be going on to an engine stand, but thinking I'll be able to put more leverage on if it's still bolted to the chassis?

Would make sense, unless you have a plan b to remove it on the engine stand. If you have the correct locking tool then it can be undone on the stand, but they tend to be very tight.

Learning as I go along, neilly. I don't really have a plan A never mind a plan B :rolleyes: I've been reading old relevant posts and posts like this to pick up info. I've started a thread on the 300Tdi engine forum, so feel free to 'keep an eye' on my progress there. All advice, tips and tricks gratefully received. ;)

I've looked on ebay and the tools like the one Sainty made are £60 to £90. :eek:
That improvised bar being hit with the lump hammer, in the video, looks canny. ;)
 
Al, I have a 300tdi crank pulley holder you are welcome to borrow if it helps mate.

I've just bought a 27mm socket off ebay. I'll try to improvise one of those impact devices in the video neilly posted the link to.

Double check your bolt size........for some bizarre reason mine had a 30mm ...........that threw me , all set up and the incorrect impact socket size............although it is the only one I have heard of that is 30mm.......:oops::oops:

Don't worry about it mate, if you send me your address I'll stick it in the post, it isn't something I use very often, send it back when you're all done and dusted in a months time or what have you, it really isn't a problem at all.
Saves you the time and hassle of trying to cobble something together or spending the £80 on the proper tool.
