Hi all, I just had a few quick questions if anyone can help, firstly I've got an oil leak at the front of the engine (p38 diesel) it seems to be coming from the auxiliary belt tensioner is this possible and should the tensioner seem loose it's the part wit the large Allen in the front. Also should the pulley for the water pump be loose? Many thanks, got the car in bits at the moment.

Tensioner boss is screwed into timing case and sealed by an O'ring. No it should not be loose. Bloody great nut on it though not easy to do without a big box spanner. If you do take it out, clean the threads on it and the casing, fit a new O'ring and put Hylomar on the male and female threads it will seal it and act as weak thread lock.

Thanks, is there an alternative to hylomar if I can't get it specifically? Should the water pump pulley be loose? Cheers.

Just done mine. Metal impellar one from Island 4x4 is £33 which isn't bad. Might as well do the thermostat while you're at it.

They maybe pricey but always go for genuine thermostats. Many of the pattern ones don't have the bleed valve. Easy to get airlocks in the heater/head circuit without that.

+1 I'd never buy anything but genuine thermostats and expansion chamber caps. These are the sort of things that can be made cheaply (badly) by anyone and will kill you car stone dead if they're duff.

Ok, so replaced the water pump but I found out why the mounting for the aux belt tensioner was loose basically te outer cap is stuck to the inner boss and I am now struggling to split the two parts so that the inner boss can be tightened to the engine properly and then the cap on top.
