Afternoon!

I recently acquired a '94 Disco 300 TDi and am trying to iron out a couple of niggles... any help would be much appreciated!
a) When I stick it into reverse (it's a manual) the reversing light does not illuminate unless I continue to pull back on the gearstick. Any thoughts?
b) The central locking unlocks all the doors except the tailgate. It can be opened if I use a key to pop the lock up but that's it. Help needed!

I would also be interested in people's opinion of sidesteps... I haven't got them presently but am tempted.

Thanks awfully in advance!

FL

Reversing light switch needs adjusting ... ISTR you have to attack it from within, removing the console and gear covers. Lots of further info if you search the forum.

A small, circular spring has broken .. find a set on ebay. A right bitch of an awkward job .. surprisingly easy if you have fingers a foot long, with the strength of a gorilla and finesse of a seamstress. Again, a search of the forum covers this many times ..

I would also be interested in people's opinion of sidesteps... I haven't got them presently but am tempted.

Frankly, I think they're ****e and get in the way when out green-laning. If you need sidesteps, get rocksliders with tree slider bars ... ;)

The reversing switch may need cleaning or adjustment, or poss replacement.
The rear door is the small spring inside the latch. Get the spring off ebay.
I have side steps on mine, Don't bother with them if you plan on going off road.
Good luck with you new motor!!

Hmmm... sadly, I have the strength of a seamstress and the finesse of a gorilla, so I might leave this one! I will have a bash at the switch, though, what can happen! Thanks awfully, FL.

Welcome to the world of the 300TDi Disco, mines a '97.

regards a) see: Me asking exactly the same question

But basicly there is a locking ring on the switch in the side of the gearbox under the Disco (I think a post in the thread linked above shows a picture of where), you need to slacken the nut off, feed the switch further into the casing and do the nut up again. I havn't done mine yet but I believe it sorts most problems like that.

As regards the other problem with the back door, when I was looking at Discos a few had that problem but that just means it's a common problem so someone on here is bound to have some suggestions.

Have a go at the spring, it's not that hard to do. Take the door card off and have a look, make a note of where the linkages go (use coloured tape even). Disconnect the linkages, undo the bolt that secure the latch to the door. remove the latch and have a look, you'll soon see the spring, it'll be snapped. A pair off thin nosed pliers is needed to put it in place.
It's worth doing, cos the other doors will need doing at some point! And the tailgate is the easiest one.

Will do Pete... if it's not a silly question, what's the best way to get the door card off? It seems to be held on with little press studs that don't reattach...?

If you get the springs off ebay, the seller normally sells those clips, get a bag of em, there cheap enough. Just take it easy, don't forget the bolts for the handle and the trim around the lever (there's a little screw behind the lever).
