Hi there I'm hoping someone can help me in here. I've a 3.9 v8 petrol disco 2. After the pipes were frozen due to cold weather started engine I had a massive leak which I am told is the freeze core plugs. Is it possible to repair this myself?

just been replacing mine very easy , get the old ones out clean up hole, make sure fit decent new plugs and i put a bit of sealer on and used a big socket to tap them back in

Oh OK I've been told that the whole engine is to be taken out to get to them? And cheapest quote for a garage that will 'try' and do it is £600+

Sorry don’t know configuration of v8 engine and access what I meant is if you can see enough of them to get them out ie with hammer and chisel or fencing pliers as I used then it’s easy to bang new ones in

Have a search in this V8 forum there’s a few queries

First you need to be sure where the water is coming out from. 3 each side and a couple in the back (I think)

Fill it and find it first.

Some can be reached but the V8 is tight.
Obviously they have some in the back which is an engine out job:(

If you can see it, it’s probably diy able. With patience and swear words :).

Identify which core plug is leaking, u maybe lucky and find only one or two on the side of the block is giving a problem, removal and replacement is easy but your time and expense will be taken up removing parts to get access and then refitting.
If as u say the coolant loss is”massive” then unfortunately the stuff that can be purchased and added to the coolant will only work with a small drip type of leakage.

On a V8 RRC the plugs at the sides can be renewed, but as said the back ones are an engine out job.
Antifreeze at 50 percent all the year round, change coolant every couple of years.

The rear plugs are behind the bellhousing and Flywheel/flexplate Tranny depending.

You could do them by dropping the tranny..

at the rear plugs for the cam bore have oil behind them so should not be rusty
