Well, I’ve taken the plunge and crossed over to the dark side. I bought a 2003 td5 today after 6 years with my 300 tdi.
I feel like a fish out of water at the moment, because I knew my tdi inside out and felt confident I could fix anything on it.
Still, onwards and upwards. The td5 is mint, I was lucky to find such a good one. Can anyone recommend a good diagnostic tool for reasonable money?

I trust you went over it with a fine toothed comb, areas like the rear shock and spring mounts outside chassis rails. Plus checked all the electrics etc.
How much do you consider reasonable money?

Yes, I went over it with a fine tooth comb. The chassis, etc, is solid and has been treated inside and out. Here’s the previous owners description;

Top of the range model finished in Zambezi silver with full black leather trim
Climate control, electric heated seats, cruise control, twin electric sunroofs (both working), parking sensors, heated screens, traction control, hill decent control, 6 CD multi changer, privacy glass.
It has covered 147k but has been maintained regardless of cost
Some of the highlights from the history include:
Alternator in 2013 (£225)
Starter motor in 2013 (£164)
New engine bay wiring loom in 2013 (£387)
New air suspension compressor and air bags in 2013 (£490)
Air con compressor in 2013 (£332.95)
Fuel pressure regulator in 2014 (£183)
Radiator in 2015 (£197.40)
New Genuine brake calipers, sliders, discs, and pads all round in 2017 (£500)
New brake pipes and stainless steel braided hoses in 2017
Wheels refurbished and new General Grabber AT3 tyres in 2017 (£640)
New side steps in 2017 (£220)
Last year with a full service it also had all transmission fluids changed, new ACE filter, new exhaust system with stainless steel decat exhaust (original cat included), EGR removal kit (again all original parts included), wastegate modulator, all new boost vacuum hoses, intercooler flush with new silicone hoses, AC fan, sump gasket replaced, injector harness replaced, new rocker cover gasket, oil pump bolt replaced with latest version as precaution.
this week it has had a full service (less than a 1000 miles since last one!) new steering arms (all 4 ball joints replaced with Lemforder parts) 4 wheel laser alignment.
Last year it also had new side steps, brand new genuine side body mouldings and wheel arch trims fitted because they were looking faded.

Full Dinitrol treatment

Drives very well, it's never had a tow bar fitted and comes with thousands of pounds worth of receipts, service history print out, all original manuals, old tax discs, 2 keys.
MOT till September.

I’d say reasonable money for a diagnostic tool, would be a couple of hundred quid?
 
Generally speaking, there are three diagnostic code readers considered to be compatible with the Disco 2, the Nanocom, Hawkeye and Lynx.
They're all about the same sort of price at around 300 quid. Each has their advantages and disadvantages. The Nanocom and Hawkeye are "stand alone" devices, the Lynx requires a laptop. The Nanocom is a colour display and the Hawkeye is a monochrome display.
Be careful about some of the cheaper code readers on the market that claim to work with the D2. They almost never say which engine. The petrol D2 was compatible with OBDII protocols in the mid nineties whereas the diesel Discovery wasn't compatible until the release of the D3 in mid-2004.

It sounds like you've found a gem there, but don't "rest on your laurels" just yet. You're still going to have to build yourself a maintenance routine. The engine oil should be replaced every 6000 miles (according to the book), I do mine every year along with all filters and the transmission fluids every other year. The suspension air bags should be considered as service items too and seeing as they were last done in 2013, they're about due for replacement.
The Dinitrol treatmet isn't everlasting either, it should be inspected at least every year and "topped up" as necessary.

I know. I hpi’d it before I went to look and it’s all straight. Only ever failed an MOT, and it was just one or two, in bulbs and headlight alignment! Only advisories have been tyres and brake discs!
While I was viewing it and driving it, the sellers phone never stopped ringing. Soon as saw it, I knew I’d have to move fast.
 
Sounds nice, any problems saying how much?

Only asking as I paid £7.5k for mine 4 years ago.
