  1. Stolen from my rebuild thread for a bit more exposure.

Anybody able to help on a mechanical issue?

I've not done anything to the 110 for about three months now, every job seemed to hit a dead end, work has been hectic, kids, life etc etc...
Last time I ran the engine it decided to leak oil out of the cooler pipes. No bother, it's naturally aspirated so don't really need that, and will one day become a 300tdi anyway so wasn't about to spend money on new pipes. The time before that I was attempting to move it under its own power and realised the clutch was stuck on. So I've plugged off the cooler pipe outlets and today thought I'll see about that clutch. To cut a long story a bit shorter, here's what I've got.
Put gearbox in 3rd, 4th or 5th, transfer box in hi locked. Put the clutch to the floor and turn it over (diesel off) and it turns but is obviously dragging the clutch but is turning. Sounds normal right?? Release the clutch and turn it over again - no resistance whatsoever and spins over as fast as though it was in neutral.

Even easier way of describing is:-
I put the car in gear, any gear, it doesn't matter. Diff lock or unlocked makes no difference, high or low also makes no difference. All wheels on ground and chocked. Try to start and car stays put. Press the clutch and it tries crawling forward. Very strange.

That's a strange one all right. I wonder if the friction plate is fitted the right way round? A camera up the bellhousing might show what is going on. Lidl were selling cheap (£30) endoscopes a while back.

Does sound like plate is wrong way round, replaced a bmw clutch delivered by the AA which clearly had geirbeirstraise(gearbox side) printed on it. Obviously didn't work as it was fitted to the flywheel Side. Not saying that mr clutch don't know there stuff but...........

Thanks for the replies, I'll pull the engine out and see what's what. It did drive but I only drove it once. It was delivered to me and the lad reversed it off the trailer and drove into the drive. I then reversed it back off the drive turned round and reversed it on. It's not been driven since although all seemed fine at the time. I've put a new clutch in it and am sure it's the right way but will see when I take it apart.

Evening all, thought I'd finish this thread just in case anybody else has the same issue though it's highly unlikely. Got home from work today and though I'd whip the engine out. Not a great deal in the way so didn't take long. Pulled it out and up and look straight in the bell housing - nothing wrong. Look at the clutch cover and there's the problem - hadn't tightened the bolts! All six were there but only finger tight. So there we have it, I'm officially a knob. Put it back together, 34nm seems not very tight but tighter than they were:D, just got too dark to be adjusting the engine that last bit so will finish later in the week.

Can be easily done. Bit of a pain, but at least you've got it sorted. :)
