hi everyone,

I know this has been covered before but having read that many fixes etc I thought I would understand it from the beggining,

I have a series of clicking from the dash on start up, now I live in Dubai so the heater isn't really necessary for me, the book and exclamation mark appear after the last three clicks on start up, my Range Rover being left hand drive, if you don't have the stereo on you can hear the aircon system making a sound like it's adjusting at various times, I've changed the ac filters a couple of days ago, now the aircon works perfectly, left side vent a bit weak, rear vents weak, so is there a quick fix for the clicking or is it dash out etc, sorry for asking again.....

damn it, we prayed in vain..
it does sound like your blend motors, will be corrected in my ignorance. Does this only happen in auto mode or manual mode?

I think the heater system does a cycle to verify itself and then comes to the conclusion its fine or not!! Sounds like you have jammed flap motors or hot cold blend motors... Help we need input!!

I'm definatly NOT removing the dashboard, so any quick fix that anyone can advise would be good!

some bugger here will have done this on theirs, will have to wait for "knows better" to come along.
Ive not done mine yet! One quick fix would be not to use the heater!! What good that is, is well, errr...
you may be able to fix it reasonably easily or you may have to bite the bullet! As you say over your way there's not a great deal of nice ones around. Maybe the previous owner had received a quote for this repair?

I would assume we are talking a p38 here, here dose sound like sticking flaps, there is a fix using self taping screws on the ducting but I don't know the full details.

If the flap servos are "clicking", it could either be stuck flaps, or gears in the motors. My bet would be the gears. If the flaps were stuck, then the motors should stall, which the HEVAC should sense. Either way if the HEVAC cannot fully cycle the motors it will cause the book symbol.

If you have triple-jointed arms & hands, then remove the glovebox & instruments, and then unscrew the motors. Then see if the flaps can be easily moved by hand. While the motors are accessible, open them up and inspect for broken gears or bad potentiometers.

Self-tapping screw is a bodge, and doesn't work if the heater box has rubber edges on the flaps (like mine). In this case it will be the flap shafts that are sticking, which means heater box out . . . which can only be done by removing the dash top section.

superb! Does anyone have any photos of this procedure, and of the screw temp fix?

It is very unusual for the blend flaps to stick. However if someone has powered the motors whilst they were not in place it is possible for them to have motored to one extreme or the other and stripped teeth from the gears. That would cause clicking at both sides. Distribution flaps are the one's that stick the most because one motor drives two flaps through a quadrant. The quadrant can seize and/or the rear flap tighten up. The self tapper temp fix is for the flap seize problem. It is put in the joint between the left and right heater box halves to spread them and take weight off the rear flap bearings. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Only way to repair a heater properly is to remove it and strip it. The seals at the top to the dash will almost certainly have perished and become useless. Removing the dash to remove the heater Aircon unit is pretty straight forwards IF you know what you are doing, a nightmare if you don't.

I think I'm going to have a look at it, but I don't ever have a use for the heater, winter in Dubai is rarely below 20 degrees, just the clicking is annoying, I really appreciate all the replays I've had so far, the wealth of knowledge here is fantastic
