Options and costs please.
My LSE rear axle/diff casing is leaking. It seems the axle itself is corroded and needs either:
a; A new rear axle
b; A diff pan repair - similar labour but obviously less in parts
c; Some sort of epoxy leak repair as a temporary measure.

Would b be as long term as a?

Are air rear axles the same as spring rear axles?

Thanks
David

It seems to be exactly the area that a diff pan plate would cover.
That seems the best solution but I have no idea how much a replacement recon axle would be.
Might prevent any further axle related things in the future.

A replacement axle casing would be the best option, if you can get one, but not an easy job to do.
Have a look in the Landy mags. for the repair section, I'm sure I have seen them in there. It could be fitted in situ provided that all the usual precautions are taken regarding the proximity to the fuel tank etc when welding.
Mig welding would be best.

Had a quick look in an old Landy mag. They are (Or were) sold by Steve Parker Land Rovers in Whitwort, Rochdale, tel. 01706 854222 for £79.50.
Maybe some of our North Western members may be able to confirm.

oh yeah I know that, I painted mine with epoxy after a good wire brshin w my grinder but if they have rusted enuf to leak sureley they have been weakened quite abit too, and there only cast anyway right?

disco and RR leak cos the **** rests on top of the diff pan and cos its hidden by fool tank it seldom gets washed off - just the correct place to rust

Found a small hole in the top of my rear diff i put some of that putty stuff on it n put a diff guard on seems ok

So what are these epoxy/putty products then? This was suggested adn as I have LPG tanks at the back the access is a bit better - certainly easy to get to when the car was on a lift. Shouldn't be too hard with the suspension locked in high.

well if your down my way I can get you enough defence grade epoxy to do the job and it will never come off if you prep it right!

Thanks for the offer Fett.
I don't think I'm your way anytime soon but if I am and I haven't fixed it I'll take you up on that.

Ok temporary repair done, seems ok on the face of it. I'll run it a bit this week before painting and waxoyling it. It turned out to be a single pin prick hole which got a bit bigger with poking!

Investigation would suggest that diff oil is not transmission oil so what do people use? What came out was quite brown and viscous so I presume it wouldn't hurt with some fresh?

And how do you fill the diff casing easily - I'm thinking of an easibleed type system so I'll need some lengths of tubing. Chap at garage used a manual pump attached to a very large drum of the stuff - has anyone come across a rather smaller version of this?

If the pressure dispenser is not available, either an Oil syringe or the bottle with the tube attached is the only way, as EP80/90 is a bit too thick to put through an empty Fairy Liquid bottle !!!
No it isnt - either a small pressurised garden sprayer (without spray nozzle) or a small oil can will do the job fine - I use either to do my disco Gearbox.
