Check your wheel nuts

Tragic, I hope the poor kid gets better soon.
This is just another reason why wheel nuts should be torqued up. Too slack and they can come undone, too tight and the threads can become damaged or the studs stretch to breaking point.
Of course we don't know whether it was a failure of the wheel nuts or the hub.

Exactly why I use a torque wrench now 99% of the time.

bet it will also be the physiological thoughts of the accident

everything crossed and thoughts also got to the family as they must be beside themselves

i’ve also read that ref wheel spacers where it’s caused a wheel to come off

alas don’t know the full story of course ref spacers but makes u think

N/S/F wheel came off a Discovery (it's nearly always N/S/F) yesterday morning and hit an 11 year old :(

Poor lass is critical, I hope she pulls through
it is allways nsf i had one come off as i had heavy spacers on ,heavy wheel,tyre or spacer is likely to come loose apart from torque i used loctite, i warn customers that have any of the above to keep nuts checked
its a few miles up the road from me and according to local knowledge the prognosis for the poor girl isnt good at all

I recently purchased a set of wheel nut pointers.. they are plastic points, fit under each nut with arrows pointing each other. If a nut comes loose you can see, because the pointer moves.. thay use them on lorry’s and hgv vehicles..
I can understand what you're saying, but those indicator devices don't help when the wheel nuts are being done up in the first place. While they can show if a nut is coming undone over time, they cannot prevent the nuts being done up too tightly or not being done up tight enough when the nuts are being fitted.

I agree, that’s why I use a torque wrench when I fitted them!
Problem is, not even a torque wrench will stop them coming off if there is a problem...
but at least with these indicators, you might notice if they come loose??

Since I nearly lost both fronts on my way to Amsterdam several years ago, I am a 100% torque wrench guy now, to the point that the big torque wrench actually lives in the Discovery and I have a second smaller one in the tool chest.

Truly horrifying, and one can only pray the poor wee girl pulls through ok.
 
I always use a torque wrench to donup my wheel nuts and check them regularly.

I had a wheel come off once but it wasn’t a landrover and it wasn’t to do with the wheel nuts as the hub was still attached to the wheel.

Poor girl I hope she pulls through.
Be interesting so see what happens with regards ‘mods’ on the LR - plenty of ‘experts’ on that article in the comments
